Top 10 Things to do in Le Morne, Mauritius

September 22, 2017 Timmy Ribble

Kite surfers, paragliders and deep-sea fishermen flock to windswept La Morne, a small village on the southwest side of Mauritius. Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a dramatic basaltic rock peak dotted with caves that once harbored runaway slaves, presides over luxury resorts and a wide beach widely regarded as the best on the island. Throw in a shimmering turquoise lagoon and gorgeous sunsets and calling the town "paradise" doesn't seem like a cliché.

Le Morne Brabant

. Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest Mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.

I used this company for both airport transfers & day tours. Apart from a delay with pick up from the airport (our flight arrived early), everything went smoothly. The company responded promptly to emails and are very accomodating in terms of tailoring tours. I would highly recommend the day tour to the south of the island. I did a couple of tours & the trip to the south of the island was the highlight of my entire trip.

La Vallee des Couleurs

Welcome to la Vallee des Couleurs, haven of peace and beauty. Forget all your worries and daily stress and let yourself be carried away by the mystery of this fantastic Panorama. La Vallee des Couleurs is an extraordinary place where you can have the opportunity to contemplate a beautiful land, which is composed of twenty-three colours. A lush vegetation, birds, animals, endemic plants, ponds, rivers, Waterfalls and the multicoloured earth form this magnificent landscape. Explore this real beauty of nature with a stroll on foot, trip on the different types of quad bike, buggy or doing a safari in our Range Rover. You can also visit "La Vallee des Couleurs" by using the different points of zip lines which covers the entire park. Our zipline of 1.5 kms is among the longest in the world and the longest in the Indian Ocean, which will give you a "once in a lifetime" sensation, where photos will be taken as souvenir. The Nepalese Bridge of 350 metres covers is a sensational one, where the adventurous person will be able to see the forest as well as animals passing by like the deer and the macaques. La Vallee des Couleurs" is a pleasure for all senses: the songs of birds and the sounds of Waterfalls are like the sweetest music and the picturesque view is a pure delight for the eyes. The restaurant of the valley provides delicious meals that will ravish you if ever you feel hungry.

I expected more from the place than what I actually got to experience. The park in itself is not huge. We went on a hot sunny day and mind you, there were not many shaded areas where one could chill under the scorching sun. Sunscreens and hats were of no use, ended up with bad sun burn. All activities at the park were ridiculously priced. As a local, I believe I was charged tourist prices. 1h quad cost more than 2k per person and you only went round in the park (that included stop times at the different stop points -waterfall, couloured earth, barely there petting farm). I would instead suggest for someone to do the park by foot and thus avoid the ridiculous quad prices. Coming to 23 couloured earth, I could barely count 10 on it. Only positive side of the park would be the zipline. Amazing experience but lasts less than 1 min.
