A wonderful experience, paddling through a flooded forest, watching the sunset and catching a glimpse of these rare creatures. Although very rare, they concentrate into various pools and so you have a very good chance of seeing some. That said don't expect to see them leaping out of the water like a bottlenose - more likely you will see backs and dorsal fins broaching, although that's still pretty exciting. The trip was well organised and guided, and far nicer to be on the river under your own steam paddling quietly, than one of the noisy motorised alternatives.

Jump on the ferry and cross to this peaceful and charming island in the middle of the Mekong river. The ferry leaves from near the port office and takes 5 minutes to cross the river, not sure if there is a timetable or it just leaves when it likes!! Once on the island you can hire pushbikes or motobikes, take a driver or just walk around. There are several small places to eat, we eat at the fried noodle and fried egg restaurant - all it served was well you can guess!!
There is a path that circles the island allowing views of the small villages, temples, rice fields and the small floating village.
Well worth a trip for half a day.

Your guide Phiya was really nice and answer all the questions you have about the way of living in the country side, the culture,... The tour was really an unforgettable experience. Both home stay was really clean and the people were so nice. We also ate so great there, real cambodian food with fresh fish and vegetables, yummy !
We also have the chance to go to a temple party, was really fun to dance with the children ! So as I wrote an unforgettable experience with really nice people !
Just a comment, maybe we could do less tuktuk and more bike and also some kayaking could be included in this pack !

Sithy, the owner of Cambodian Pride Tours, did a terrific job organizing and running our whole tour of Cambodia—a 10 day trip including the temples near Siam Reap (where everyone goes) as well as other, more isolated, historical sites, and a number of cultural and adventure experiences (a mountain top temple, kayaking on the Mekong, home-stay in a small village, local productions, etc). From the get-go, Sithy was amazing. In the planning stages, he responded so quickly to our emails that I began to believe he never slept! We did a “pick and choose” itinerary, and he listened to us and very quickly understood what we were looking for and the kinds of places we like. He had great suggestions for putting together an interesting, varied, and compact tour. We were lucky to have Sithy himself as our guide for the whole tour. He was full of information, knew a lot history, and had a great understanding of how the modern world works. He grew up as the Pol Pot era was ending so he has a very personal connection with that era. But, like many Cambodians, he looks forward with hope rather than backwards in sadness. Our experience was supplemented by excellent local guides when more expertise was needed. Sithy has developed many contacts with local guides and services in different places and chose really good ones for us. During the tour and the road he was, again, very responsive to our desires and suggestions. For example, he added detours to local markets and found us local food specialties once we showed an interest.
Our traveling goals are two-fold: to learn some history first hand and to delve into the present day life style and environment of the local people. Cambodia is very interesting on both counts, and Sithy’s arrangements and guiding enabled us to do both in the best possible way. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! (And you will save a lot of money if you skip the tour agents in your home country and book directly with Cambodian Pride!)

Don't expect to pat or swim with these fresh water dolphins, but you definitely will see them with their unusual faces, small dorsal fin....as they play in safety. We were out for about an hour to get that one special photo and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Suggest take plenty of water and also sunscreen. There are toilets to the left where you get on your boat so I also suggest you visit them prior to your adventure.

Phnom Sombok

Reviewed By Raymond W - Chengdu, China

Let's be frank here, the temple on Phnom Sombok is no great shakes architecturally speaking. It consists mostly of a colllection of concrete Buddhas, nagas and shrines, none of which display any great artistic merit. In a country renowned for temples, this one is rather nondescript.
However, the 93-metre high 'mountain' of Phnom Sombok is the highest point in the district. As such it commands great views of the Mekong and the surrounding countryside. The forest on its slopes, home to a large troop of monkeys, is also quite attractive. Keep your expectations modest and you will enjoy the clamber up Phnom Sonbok.

Kampi

Many tourists are attracted to Kratie because of the chance of seeing the rare Irrawaddy dolphins that inhabit the stretch of river between here and the Laos border to the north. In fact there are only about 85 remaining according to the latest estimates. They have been caught in fishermen's nets, injured by speeding boats so now there is a conservation project to try and protect them. Kampi is about 20 kms north of Kratie and you can reach there by bike or hire a tuk tuk. Once there you have to pay a few dollars to be taken out in a boat where the boatman will turn off the engine and hopefully a few dolphins will surface. It is hard to get a photo of them as they just appear at the surface and quickly go underwater again. I clicked my camera about 30 times before managing to get a half decent photo. I must admit i feel a little sad seeing these wonderful creatures that may soon be extinct. Once the boatman takes you back to the shore there are a few souvenir shops with mostly wood carvings for sale.

I was with a group that was lucky enough to be able to release baby turtles back into the Mekong River. We had the opportunity to learn about the various types of turtles they have at the center. It is a small facility but they do wonderful work.
