November 29, 2017 Jana Sager

Gengenbach is a town in the district of Ortenau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and a popular tourist destination on the western edge of the Black Forest with about 11,000 inhabitants. Gengenbach is well known for its traditional Alemanic "fasnacht", ("Fasend"), a kind of historically influenced celebration of carnival, where tradition is followed, from wearing costumes with carved wooden masks to clapping with a "Ratsche" (a traditional-classic wooden "sound-producing" toy). Gengenbach also boasts a picturesque, traditional, medieval town centre ("Altstadt"). The traditional town Gengenbach is the proud owner of the world's biggest advent calendar. The 24 windows of the 18th century town hall represent the 24 "windows" of an Advent calendar. The town also hosts a department of The Graduate School of Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, part of the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg. The nearest cities in the region are Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Strasbourg/France. Gengenbach is twinned with the town of Obernai, Alsace, France.

Pappelwaldsee Berghaupten

Historische Altstadt

We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed wandering around the streets of this charming town. Upon our arrival we located the tourist information office to pick up a town map, which also included a self-guided walk. We really enjoyed the ambiance here and found the locals to be very friendly and helpful. The main square in Gengenbach is very beautiful and picturesque.
One of my most memorable things about this town were the lovely, colourfully painted life-sized cows scattered throughout the town - it is a great way to characterize the town and make it stand out from the many other small towns in this area.

The Mr and I took a walking tour using a brochure and map we picked up at the tourist office. I highly recommend taking a peek in this beautiful church. I was raised Catholic and truly appreciate the beautiful architecture. Nobody does churches better than the Europeans. Having the organist playing was icing on the cake. I felt God's peaceful presence here!

If you are in Gengenbach and wondering what to do, this should be on your list. The hours are somewhat limited, only open on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday (everyday during advent). See website for details.
Being from the states, we were familiar with Mardi Gras and carnival. This museum highlights the German celebration, and more specifically, the celebration in Gengenbach. The cost is a meager 2.5 euros for adults and less for kids. You will only need an hour or two (if you are taking your time) to go through the entire museum. Photography is allowed. All text is in German, but if you do not speak German, I think you will still enjoy browsing.
You begin by watching a looping film about carnival; bench Seating is available here. The museum consists of 6-7 floors (tiny floors!) with a spiral staircase in the middle. If you have mobility issues, this is not a museum for you. Also not for small children unless you want to carry them. Don't miss the top floor where the door can be opened, and you can stand on the tower balcony for a fantastic 360-degree view of Gengenbach.

I could see the building sitting high above Gengenbach so I set out to find it. I followed the signs and powered up the road, with it's switchbacks to arrive just before dusk. Being winter, I was all alone up there and it was so lovely in the snow. There are 360 degree views up there. The chapel itself was not open, but the walk was still well worth it. A little way down there is a seat with wonderful views over Gengenbach and surrounds.
On the way down i found a steep set of stairs that made a short-cut back to town, but I thoroughly enjoyed the walk up with it's varied views back toward town.

On a rainy day this was a lovely place to spend an hour. The children really enjoyed the room with the ball display and the old fashioned toys. There was an art exhibition upstairs (not quite to my taste but very nicely presented) Lots of interesting design items in the shop.
