Top 10 Things to do in Downtown, Newfoundland

April 7, 2022 Jana Sager

Looking out over the city of St. John's, you may be reminded of a mini San Francisco (minus the cable cars). St. John's provides the ideal balance between nature and nightlife, from the East Coast Trail and its stunning scenery to the colorful entertainment district along George Street. Although it's the largest city in Newfoundland, the vibe is still very small-town. You'll feel welcome in the City of Legends!

I first did a couple of escape rooms (Patient 709 and Lost Colony of Atlantis) at Escape Quest back in February of 2019. This time around we did 1892. I will come back every time there is a new room to do! Every time I have been to Escape Quest the staff are consistently energetic, the rooms are engaging but not impossible to complete, and it's always a good time. I've loved puzzles and riddles and brain teasers since I was a kid and these rooms provide so many unique challenges that get your brain going. I've done these rooms with just a couple of friends each time and we always have a laugh. Super great place for an hour or two of gameplay (depending on how many rooms you book), great for team building or just having a fun night out! GO VISIT!! :) :)

Loved our time at Jack Axes. The instructor was super into it and helpful. The beer was tasty, and even though we couldn't take it to the court/lane, it was only a short walk to have another sip. They didn't hurry us out the door and we generally had an excellent time.

24 hours later and my coworkers and I are still laughing - Skeets, Snobs and Peppermint Knobs is a must see! The entertainers were absolutely fabulous, very engaged with the audience, excellent singers, had us laughing the entire show. There are two options for your main course but there was no problem accommodating one in our party that had dietary restrictions. I recommend taking a rum cake home, so delicious! If you are interested in drinking, there is a great selection available at the bar and prices are below average! There is metered parking in front of the building which is free after 6:00pm, we did not have trouble finding a nearby parking spot. Overall an excellent night, I highly recommend it.

St. Thomas' Church

Reviewed By CollinsFamilyNL

It was amazing that a wooden church built in 1836 survived great fires and storms. The vision of this church is to be an Enduring Beacon, and it certainly is. The pews are from early 1800's and still have painted number plates on them as pews were once rented by families based on their size, and some families have used the same family pew for many generations (although renting of pews ended many years ago). The stain glass windows also have history and the one on the altar is in memory of the same child as the statue in Bowering Park. I was fascinated with this beautiful church, its architecture, and history. I also recommend visiting Commissariat House located directly behind the church, which also served as the church rectory for many years. There is also no charge for tours which is a nice bonus, but we did leave a donation after being so impressed by our tour guide.

We stayed locally and our host left us some Newfoundland Chocolate Company chocolate. I became hooked! I needed more! So we went to the shop and I ended up with 5 more chocolate bars - the blueberry chocolate bar is definitely my favourite!
