My grandfather, Felix Moses, was the last religious leader in this modest but well-tended building, lovingly restored in recent years. My family and I visited a couple of years ago and to say I was emotionally overwrought would be an understatement. I had imagined a relatively sparse building because when Kristallnacht happened in November of 1938 the insides of the building had been vandalized by the Nazis and everything Jewish had been trashed or stolen. But before that infamous night some intrepid and caring locals removed all the torah scrolls and buried them so that they would not be harmed. These scrolls survived the war and one of them is on display. Locals created a model of what the synagogue looked like before defacement. The Star of David is displayed twice; once outside and the other was in stained glass that could also be seen from the outside. They also have some other pieces of Judaica in a case and photos of the last 12 Jews deported in 1942 and were murdered on the orders of the elected German government. The town is beautiful and worth a visit on its own.
