Glacier Lagoon

Reviewed By schmidtmg - Switzerland, null

The Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon is a very special place - it is where the mighty Vatnajökull glacier dips into the Atlantic. The landscape of smaller or bigger icebergs that broke into the water from the glacier and slowly drift towards the ocean is amazing. You can actually pick up. little boulders of ice that have been washed onto the shore. This must rank with the ten or twelve most awesome natural sites that I have seen..... and it's worth the long drive from Reykjavik to see.

Stopped by with my daughter and Jon the owner greeted us warmly and took us on tour around his garden which had surpricingly much variety of icelandic stones. And then he has a store which he sells his own products. We bought a cheese knife where the shaft was from the horn of reindeer and it was really beautiful. If you are in Djupivogur this is a must see.

Minjasafnio a Bustarfelli - Bustarfell Museum

Bustarfell museum is an ancient manor, and one of the largest estates in Vopnafjorður. The same family has lived in Bustarfell since 1532. The turf house has a long and complex history, as the structures have been adapted to changing conditions. As seen today, the Icelandic turf house is the product of centuries of interactions between Icelandic nature and the trends of different periods. Like other turf structures, the farmhouse at Bustarfell has evolved over the centuries. The oldest part of the present building dates from after a disastrous fire in 1769. The Hjaleigan Cafe, adjacent to the old farmhouse is open daily during the summer season. The museum is open daily through the summer, 10:00 – 17:00.

Beautiful area to do some hiking and see the big glaciers of Vatnajökull. You can choose your own route and difficulty, but if you're able you should definitely go up route 55 or 56 to the edge of the glacier.
