Top 10 Things to do Good for Kids in Braga, Northern Portugal

April 20, 2022 Leonardo Torrence

Sometimes called the “Portuguese Rome” for its many churches, Braga is an ancient town in northwest Portugal. Its history and livelihood are tied to Christianity dating to the 3rd century. The city’s 12th-century Sé (Cathedral) is still one of the most popular attractions. Just outside of town lies the renowned Bom Jesus de Monte pilgrimage sanctuary, with its striking Baroque stairway. After dark, the stoic town turns upside down, with a rich nightlife thanks to its many university students.

Se de Braga

I really likes the Sè in Braga, right in the heart of the old town. For €2 you can visit the cloisters, crypt and the cathedral itself. For €3 you can visit the museum but I didnt add that particular option. The Cathedral is cavernous as you'd expect but still retains a homely and welcoming feel. I loved the banners hanging from the walls between the windows and the unbelievably intricate and decorative organ at the back of the nave. The altar is simple, but it has gorgeous stained glass windows flanking stand beautifully carved chorister chaurs. Most if the visit will be spent at the gold gilted organ I suspect. It really has to be seen to be believed, as beautiful an organ as you ever will see with a beautifully painted ceiling above it.

An open space with a church that was visited by the pope. Beautiful place, quiet and the halls used for religious activities are worth seeing. View of Braga from that height is also memorable. Pity that this place is not as much known as the boun Gesu church. Only half an hour away. Not to be missed
