Top 10 Things to do Good for Kids in Bagan, Mandalay Region

April 7, 2022 Alice Mieles

Bagan (Burmese: ပုဂံ; MLCTS: pu.gam, IPA: [bəɡàɴ]; formerly Pagan) is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2,200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.

Jasmine Family Lacquerware Workshop

Reviewed By sso617 - Bern, Switzerland

One of the best things I did in the Bagan area, maybe THE best, was go to this workshop. You will have a real experience. It is a family business, on their family compound (amazing to see), and they make beautiful, exquisite lacquer items of all types. There was zero pressure, everyone was friendly, but most importantly, they actually wanted to have a relationship with you as someone interested in what they do in the traditional way. It's hard to describe--they show you *everything* about how lacquer items are made: materials, processes, etc. Going here is a completely different experience from just buying a lacquer item in a shop. It will mean so much more to you when you get it home if you buy it here. And you will be convinced that you got the best possible product. Prices seemed entirely fair to me. But, again, this is a whole experience, not just a shopping experience. The location of the shop is correct on Google maps. Just keep going until your dot is where their shop is. As others have noted, please use an e-bike to get there; local politics and the location of the shop dictate that the owners must pay tuk-tuk and taxi drivers to show up, so they are forced to charge you more as well. It's just a five minute walk from the main road, if that, but again, e-bike is best. I was a solo traveler and sometimes that means feeling a bit awkward in situations like this, but in this case it felt completely natural. Can't recommend enough. There's a reason it's the #1 shopping experience in Bagan!

A small boutique hotel ran by a husband and wife team, who take great care to give you the best service they can. They engage with you whenever they are around. The rooms are traditional style with lots of nice extra touches. The staff offer to spray your room every night against mosquitoes and couldn't be more helpful. We only ate in the hotel as there was nowhere else suitable locally for tourists as the hygeine standards are very low outside the hotel. The hotel was beautifully clean, there were handwashing facilities in the restaurant and in the garden should you chose to eat outside. The view over the Irrawaddy river was wonderful and particularly the sunset. The owners are currently doing up a boat so they can offer dining on the boat and expand their business and I am sure this will be worthwhile for them. We had the best room in the hotel, nearest the river upstairs at the end of the balcony. No complaints there. The food was exceptional, service wonderful, the staff even got up early (at 5.00am) on our departure day to ensure we had breakfast. Highly recommend for food, or for accommodation. We would consider returning because it was so good, but would say the only thing missing for us was a swimming pool (however small).

This is a huge pagoda complex in Bagan. It includes the main pagoda and also many smaller temples. The atmosphere is very inspiring and devotional, with many devotees circumambulating, chanting, offering incense or meditating around the pagoda. There is a huge variety of architectures of the smaller temples and the main pagoda, which makes it so unique and a must visit. There is a walkway from the main Bagan road (leading to other main temples like Ananda temple), which goes via a number of markets selling Burmese traditional clothes, lacquerware etc. The pagoda can get a little crowded in the evenings. All in all, this beautiful golden pagoda is a must see for all visitors to Bagan.

This was one of my favourite Pagodas in my few days of temple seeing in Bagan. Located closer to new Bagan is was a stunning temple to see very different from many other temples with its design and detail, amazing beauty to it from all sides. Along most other temples this one had a lovely small garden area at the back you can walk around. Very peaceful place also very popular with the locals for there daily prays.

We again rode back crossing the other side of Anawrahta road and headed straight to the riverside for around 3 km to Bupaya temple. This temple is located by the Irrawaddy river, and after sunset, you can have it all by yourself as all crowd dissipates by now. It was a great place for us to spend some peaceful time away from the crowds by the river looking at the beautiful hues of the sky after sunset
