Top 10 Things to do Good for Couples in Powys, Wales

June 23, 2021 Viva Honore

Wales' spectacular scenic rural heartland, and the site of Brecon Beacons National Park, Powys is a lush land of verdant mountain valleys, craggy caves and quirky towns. The staunchly nationalistic area offers appealing outdoors opportunities. Canter on horseback through the rugged Brecon Beacons mountain range. Walk or cycle the charming valleys. Other draws are commanding Powis Castle near Welshpool and the Centre for Alternative Technology, a sustainable development center, near Machynlleth.

The Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir

The Hall is a 52 roomed, Grade 11* Gothic Revival mansion, standing in 12 acres of gardens near Llandrindod Wells in Mid Wales. The Hall offers tours to the public. The tours combine outstanding architecture, stunning interiors, thousands of collectable items and beautiful grounds. The gardens include a walled garden, woodland walks, a lake and waterfall, lawns, terraces and courtyards. From 1st November each year, all 52 rooms are decorated to individual themes for Christmas.

We were very cordially greted by Paul and his lovely dog which set the tone for a terrific experience. It's a family home which is beautifully decorated for Christmas; all of the 52 rooms are open to the tours and each has it's own theme & Xmas decs, it's often a mish-mash of styles which only adds to its origionality but the overall effect is stunning as is the decor and furnishings. If you are expecting a traditionally furnished period property you maybe disappointed (visit a NT house instead!) but it's a quirky one-off which is very refreshing - Art Deco was once "different". It's very obvious that Paul & Victoria are emensly proud of their home and all the work they've put into it and rightly so, they were extremely genial hosts who went out of their way to make us and our son very welcome going above & beyond to make our experience so positive. Credit must also go to Karen who showed us around, she was fab & so knowledgeable, the time simply flew by.

Mick Extance Off Road Motorcycle Experience

Reviewed By Perky_101 - Trowbridge, United Kingdom

Having never ridden an off-road motorbike I was a bag of nerves and excitement about the day. I shouldn't of been nervous as I finished the day full of confidence and smiles. Summing the experience up in one word.... FUN! I booked a 1-1 training experience. My riding went from lurching the bike about to smooth and confident in a single day, I have already booked another as I'm now hooked. It started with a safety briefing, due to the current Covid pandemic I was also informed of handwash stations etc. Once kitted up it was off to meet my instructor, Mick Extance himself, who is one of the friendliest blokes I've ever met. He asked about my riding experience and I felt immediately confident the day would be tailored to me. After a brief rundown of the bike, we headed off to a flat training area to get used to basic off-road techniques. Then we were off through a mix of terrain, stopping regularly to take in the stunning landscape, catch our breath, and chat. At every step Mick was explaining how he viewed the terrain, approached obstacles, and shared his wealth of experience. By the end of the day I was dirty, tired, and grinning ear to ear. The whole team are friendly, welcoming, and approachable. One of the best experiences I've had.

My 7 year old daughter had such a fabulous evening learning to throw a pot with Alex. He is such a patient and fun teacher who coped admirably with her overflowing enthusiasm. She is thrilled that she made bowls and a cup she will be able to use (once they are finished being fired). Highly recommend this experience and next time I will bring the rest of the family and definitely have a go myself.

Want To Canoe?

Canoeing on the River Wye We invite you to 'get away from it all' and discover the beauty of the River Wye. The Wye is one of the most beautiful rivers in the British Isles and one of the few you can navigate, without restriction, for over 100 miles. It meanders through picturesque countryside to where it joins the River Severn at Chepstow and is well populated with wild life. Herons, Cormorants, Kingfishers, Swans and Otters are frequently seen. This peaceful setting is the ideal place to spend a few hours, a day or even a week. Hire a canoe. Leave your car on our free riverside car-park. Take a picnic (we provide barrels)... ...then canoe downstream. We will pick you up, Free of Charge, from one of the designated access points and return you to your car. Should you have any distance to travel to return home, bring along a change of clothing in case you get wet! Wear something old to paddle in, together with old trainers, sandals or 'crocs' - NO WELLINGTONS. Don't forget your sun-cream and hat if it is sunny. If you decide to go for a few days or a week we can provide you with details of camp-sites and directions to the nearest pub for an evening meal. Again, we pick you up at the end of your holiday and bring you back to Hay and your car. For those who prefer home comforts, there are a few B&B establishments along the Wye. (It is advisable for people to have had some experience before going on the river - particularly those taking children).
