Canova Hospedaje

Cool decor, good layover hotel

Reviewed By wandersmiles

We were arriving late and leaving early to go on a 4 day trip into the jungle so the price suited our needs of needing a cheap bed for a night. We needed somewhere to leave our bags for the 4 days and we were charged $5 per bag, this was the first time we were charged for this across our travels in Central America. Decor is cool, shower was hot and powerful, but noises can be heard from the street. The neighbourhood was a bit sketchy which is why I chose to stay in the old town when I returned to Panama City.

Playa Blanca Beach Resort

Good place for a low-key vacation

Reviewed By 805captinm

This was our first time in Panama. Once landing at the airport be prepared for a tarmac deboarding process, it was organized and quite fast due to using both doors of the plane. After passing customs and getting your photo taken, you board an air-conditioned bus that takes you a seven-minute drive to the resort! Once at the resort, the staff guides you to the conference room where they give you a drink and an official welcome to Panama from the Playa Blanca Animation team, dressed in traditional Panamanian attire. It’s a very nice show.  PROS:  -      The staff go out of the way to help you -      Our room was clean -      The food options are amazing and the quality is on point -      The evening entertainment is fun and engaging -      Nice path to go on a walk within the resort with an area to see local birds -      Feels very safe -      Staff is not “pushy” and it's like they don't even expect it when you tip them -      A/C in the room worked well and your drink fridge is restocked daily  CONS:  -   Can get very busy -      Food lines can get quite long but move fairly quickly-     - The beach chairs are not cleaned frequently enough -To get to the LAGON beach and restaurant (which is on the far side of the resort) is quite a long walk and does not offer shuttle service - Massage is quite expensive (but very nice) - Elevators are not in every building so expect to climb some stairs - The gym is hidden away and needs some serious revamping -No face cloths or “rags”   TIPS:  - To get warm water for a shower, do not turn the handle to the far left. Warm water is on as soon as you turn on the tap. Hot water is not on the traditional side as it is in Canada or The United States, for our room it was on the opposite side -Do not engage with people on horses on the public beach  -English is not most people’s first language on the resort (it's Spanish) - There are a lot of locals and South Americans, so expect a local feel - Only takes American currency including the game room -  Wi-Fi is a hit and miss but works 90% of the time in the resort -Upon leaving the resort it is a small airport. There are no restaurants or shops. The Wi-Fi is very limited in the airport so pack up food with you or eat well before leaving!  In closing, we had a wonderful vacation and would definitely pay a visit again. I want to pay a special thank you to the Playa Blanca Animation and M.C Nemo team for making my girlfriends birthday very special that night by singing Happy Birthday and getting her to lead the dance. You all are amazing and the shows were very entertaining! We looked forward to them every night and in the future!  Special thanks to Chef Elvis at the Teppanyaki restaurant and the waitress that night for making the evening incredibly special. Your skills and hospitality were wonderful. Special thank you also to O'nelia from our Panama City tour & Ramone our taxi driver who are both very knowledgeable and humble. Maria who made our reservation for the restaurants and Esteban who helped show us around. Everyone we came into contact with was fantastic, from our bartenders to gardeners or cleaning staff.

Le premier l’eau était pas assez clair pour bien distinguer les poissons mais le deuxième était juste magnifique. Au retour nous avons pu voir les fortifications de Portobello.

Tesoro Escondido

Rustic and charming facility with stunning beach front location. Located in a secluded area of the island, this property uses solar panels and recycled rain water. Bocas Town is 7 km from the property. Free WiFi is available in the shared lounging areas. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and various refreshments at the on-site bar and restaurant. This property follows permaculture principles: energy is generated by the sun and a back up generator while water is collected by a rain catchment system. Most of the grey water is used to water the gardens. Bike hire is available at the property and the area is popular for snorkeling and hiking. Bluff Beach located 1 minute away. Within walking distance to La Curba and Dumper surf breaks. Paunch surf break is 15 minutes away. 4 miles from Bocas town.

Excellent! Loved it.

The views and atmosphere were just lovely! We enjoyed the crashing waves and pleasant sound of rain during our stay. Our cottage had spectacular views of the beach below, with a nice balcony to relax and take it all in. There was a sloth right outside the balcony of the main common area while we were eating dinner and a toucan kept us company during breakfast. Although this place is a bit remote and there isn't much around it (which is a positive!), we did walk up to a restaurant just 15 minutes up the road that was really good, plus the food at Tesoro Escondido was quite good too. Just stock up on beverages and snacks in Bocas before you head up to Bluff Beach.

Incredible Oasis Stay at Bird Island Bungalows

We stayed at BIB for a week over the spring. Kat, Alex and their dedicated staff make you feel at home but in the secluded and safe jungle. We felt completely relaxed and taken care of without any ego. BIB respects privacy if you want space and isolation in their stunning minimalist boho rooms and bungalows, but they also make themselves available for any questions or requests. All the other guests were similar-minded and you could tell everyone was relaxed. From fishing, kayaking, swimming, exploring and more, there is something for everyone. Kat and team forage from the property to create unique and delicious local meals. Each one more stunning and fresh after the last. Plus, Alex makes the best mixed drinks around. They employ local folks and care about the environment. They're sustainable in every way that I could see. At first it may seem overwhelming to get there, but the website give fantastic step by step instructions. Plus, it's a fun journey. I felt completely safe there. You can do it. I would absolutely come back with a group and would love to participate in yoga there next time. I recommend BIB to anyone solo, with a travel partner or in a group to enjoy tranquility surrounded by stunning views and great people. Thank you BIB team for making this trip once in a lifetime -- but now I want to come back over and over again :)
