Willowford Wall, Turrets and Bridge

Reviewed By margaretjuliem - Carlisle, United Kingdom

Living locally, sometimes you never make the effort to see places that are round about you. A lovely little short walk along the wall down to the bridge over the river, built to finally reconnect the length of the wall. And a section of wall where there were buildings.

St Martin's Church

Reviewed By chrisbH2241WA - Wirral, United Kingdom

We heard about this church while at Lanercost Priory, & made a diversion to visit it. Unlike many churches, this represents a single vision of an architect. He commissioned all the stained glass from pre-Raphaelite artists & they are just magnificent. The east end window held us transfixed by its rich colour & design.

St Mary Magdalene Church

Excellent visit at this church; beautiful embroidered dossal to a Morris pattern. The lady who spoke to us was extremely knowledgeable about the church and the various details...including the stones given from Hadrian’s wall. She was brilliant and made you feel VERY welcome. Have a wee walk into the priory churchyard and follow the footpath round!

Birdoswald Roman Fort

Visitors can view recent excavations of this Roman fort built on Hadrian's Wall, while learning about its interesting 2,000-year history.

Very helpful staff and would be a great place for children to visit as lots of exhibits they could relate to. Not bad for the adults either. Nice place to wander around and lots of information. Car park is at the bottom of a hill and if you have difficulty in walking drop of passengers at the top then park.
