Top 10 Shopping in Saint Paul, Minnesota (MN)

September 28, 2021 Lashaunda Abraham

Saint Paul has been called the last city of the East primarily because early developers built it to fit Eastern standards: city squares or parks, towers and turrets, lofty arches, Baroque domes and elaborate adornments abound. Ideal for families and those who like to explore on foot, the capital of Minnesota offers big city attractions with small town manageability. It's an easy and scenic stroll along the banks of the Mississippi River from the Children's Museum to the Science Museum. The kids (and the young at heart) will love them both. Nearby are the grandiose State Capitol, designed by esteemed architect Cass Gilbert and the historic Como Park, which includes lovely picnic areas, a zoo and a conservatory. Also in the mix are modern museums, stately old mansions, interesting natural wonders and unique shops to browse around. Be sure to check out the stellar collection of contemporary works by local artists at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. From four-star luxury to affordable and family-friendly, Saint Paul offers a variety of lodging and dining possibilities making it a great destination for all tastes and budgets.

Golden Fig

Golden Fig is a charming shop located in the historic Crocus Hill neighborhood in St. Paul and is the first shop to be selling exclusively American made goods and goodies. Cheeses, chocolates, breads, cleaning supplies, cookbooks, greeting cards, salsa, hot sauce, spices, truffles, preserves, cooking utensils, candles, fresh breads and more.

I brought my husband into the Golden Fig for the first time yesterday. He was amazed at the range of fine chocolate and toffee available. I took him through all the different sections, starting with chocolate. We bought a bag of chocolate covered nuts ($7.63) and two chocolate bars ($5.95 & $11.95). We both spotted a bag Spicy Billy Goat Kicker brand of chips that looked good and got that too ($12.95). There is a large flavored salt and pepper section, and an eclectic seasonings section. I bought a bottle of Shawarma seasoning here the last time I was in and it is good. When I get back from Florida, I intend to stop by and get some of the salt and pepper for cooking. I see they also now have a section of dried ready-to-make soups which all looked good. We were asked several times if we could be helped, and the young woman who checked us out was very, very nice. We got our treats home and had some of them. The first two chocolate covered nuts I had were rancid, but I had a couple more and they were excellent. We had some of the Spicy Billy Goat Kicker brand chips and they tasted good and were crunchy, but the canola oil they are fried in left a coating on my tongue. We still have high hopes for the two chocolate bars we bought. I will definitely go back and buy more gourmet food items.
