Most Popular Restaurants in Saint Paul

April 14, 2018 Margarita Chappel

Saint Paul has been called the last city of the East primarily because early developers built it to fit Eastern standards: city squares or parks, towers and turrets, lofty arches, Baroque domes and elaborate adornments abound. Ideal for families and those who like to explore on foot, the capital of Minnesota offers big city attractions with small town manageability. It's an easy and scenic stroll along the banks of the Mississippi River from the Children's Museum to the Science Museum. The kids (and the young at heart) will love them both. Nearby are the grandiose State Capitol, designed by esteemed architect Cass Gilbert and the historic Como Park, which includes lovely picnic areas, a zoo and a conservatory. Also in the mix are modern museums, stately old mansions, interesting natural wonders and unique shops to browse around. Be sure to check out the stellar collection of contemporary works by local artists at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. From four-star luxury to affordable and family-friendly, Saint Paul offers a variety of lodging and dining possibilities making it a great destination for all tastes and budgets.

Tongue in Cheek

We went to Tongue in Cheek for my birthday. It is a small but funky venue so make reservations! My husband and son each tried a “one bite” appetizer that were flavor explosions! Then we shared the veggie inspired thai salad (will totally get that again!!) and pork tacos. Great combination of flavors! My son got a burger which he also thoroughly enjoyed and he is also “a foodie”. He loved the made to order non-alcoholic beverages and I enjoyed the cocktail flight! So unique and very different tastes! Definitely recommend!

Joan's in the Park

I dined here with three friends, and none of us had been here before. We were immediately impressed with the ambience of the restaurant, and Dan warmly welcomed us and made us feel right at home. The menu and featured entrees were varied and well-thought out. Dan helped us select some sharable starters and salads, and skillfully answered our questions about the entrees. Everything we ate was not only delicious, but brought together unexpected flavors and textures that really enhanced what we experienced on the palate. The wine selections were deep and varied, and everything we had -- sparkling, white, red -- was top notch. If you want to go somewhere where the food, wine and service are exceptional, and the attitude caring but laid-back, this is the place.

Excellent hot and cold sandwiches on house-baked bread. Sandwiches come with a side of potato salad or cole slaw and a kosher dill pickle. Reubens are good, but my favorite is a specialty sandwich they call the Russian Roulette---corned beef, Turkey, Swiss, and a special sauce on black Russian rye. They also make a pretty decent latke. Eat in or take out. They'll also deliver orders over $50.

Excellent food and drink in a friendly atmosphere. We have 20 taps of Minnesota craft beer, classic and new cocktails, a surprising wine list, made from scratch food with high quality (mostly local) ingredients.

The food was only surpassed by the spirit and competence of the staff. This place is small business at its best. Give yourself a treat and go!

The Buttered Tin

Reviewed By JMS6395 - Alexandria, Minnesota

My companion and I were there for brunch on a weekday and it was jam-packed!

Food is ordered cafeteria style and you are not allowed to choose a table until after your order has been placed. This left a number of people wandering, hovering and competing for vacating tables.

I ordered the Avocado Toast for $9.95. It was delicious but super white bread-y. I was expecting a grainy bread, but it was very thick slices of store-bought French bread. All of the other ingredients were fantastic, although I asked for the egg over medium and it arrived over easy. In spite of the bread and egg mishap, it was still very delicious.

My companion ordered the breakfast tacos ($12?), they were good and beautifully presented but a little bland. The chorizo was sweet, not spicy. They had some hot sauce available, which was delicious and helped jazz things up. It came with lightly dressed greens, which was nice.

We also had the house-made ginger lemonade which was good, though a little heavy on the ginger.

Prices were on the high side for a cafeteria, but the ingredients and presentation were above average.

Service was friendly, competent and fairly quick given how busy they were.

All in all it was good and we would go back.

Went here after recommendations from friends. Food was good. However, they are known for chicken and the chicken we were presented with was unrecognizable. Think maybe a breast cut in half and some other piece cut into smaller pieces. For the price would expect whole pieces of chicken. Sides were plentiful, but chicken and catfish portions small. Don't need to return.
