April 24, 2022 Christa Meece

The majestic Austrian Alps stretch across the country, an awe-striking area of Ice Age valleys, verdant heaths and alluvial cones within Europe's largest national park, 700-square-mile Hohe Tauern. Taking in the dramatic cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and the beautiful province of Tirol, home to spectacular skiing and hiking, as well as Gross Glockner, Austria's highest peak, and some of the world's best winter and summer sports playgrounds, the Austrian Alps are an outdoor lover's paradise.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road

One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. Whooshing waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier!

The roads are well-maintained thus the entrance fee is worth it. Mountain landscape is breathtaking and heavenly. One can make short stops spontaneously for clicking or snacks. Restaurants are in major hot spots. No boring moment because the weather was glorious: sunny and blue skies. It would have been otherwise had it rain. Serpentine roads. Water falls upon reaching the the top of Grosglockner !

Malta High Alpine Road

The next view I think is one of the most impressive is the Malta-Hochalm-Straße. The entrance to the road is at Brandstatt 35. To reach Mazalan, you will have to go north to Highway 100 and drive it until you reach the A10. Continue on A10 north-west to exit 130-Gmund towards Gmund. At the first circle turn left, in the second square continue straight and continue on the straight road until you reach the toll point of the landscape road. The travel time is about 45 minutes. The road is more challenging than the first route of the day, including several tunnels and sharp turns. The road runs for about 14.5 kilometers and ends at the Kölnbrein Dam, the largest dam in Austria, which rises 200 meters and stretches about 600 meters. The dam is also the highest dam in Austria, at an altitude of 1,933 meters above sea level. Guided tours take place every hour between 10: 00-17: 00. Tours are reasonably priced, and children aged 5 and under enter for free. The trip to and from the dam takes about 40 minutes. After you finish your visit to the dam and drive back to the starting point of the scenic road, you can return back on your trail to the town of Gmund

Enjoyed the drive up here very much. The road which normally cost 12 euros is free in the winter. The road was very snowy but still well maintained. Fantastic views on the way up and quite a few places to stop and enjoy them. Large car park at the end then a great walk with the dog for a couple of kilometres. Plenty of smaller slopes for the kids to enjoy the sledge. Great trip.

This is a must-do on a motorcycle, especially when there's still snow around. Great road and at the top you're treated with an outstanding motorcycle museum.

There are several options to park your car around the lake. We went for the location near a restaurant and boat rental. Though the stairs may seem to be a bit disencouranging, it was worth the effort. It was a great day at the lake, with stunning views and cooling (very cool) water to swim in. We had great summer weather and were able to hire a watercycle. There were also possibilities of boat rentals, SUPs and kayaks. I think this depends on the weather if they’ll be out there...
