Itsukushima Shrine

The famous shrine built on stilts with its torii gate set in the sea.

Reviewed By Sparkie09 - Goa, India

Was such an experience visiting this shrine in Miyajima...walking through the path and an old gate and the sight of the floating Tori gate in the sea and the temple itself on stilts...to beat the high tides.

Mitaki Temple

Reviewed By Silver325

A must see for art and nature lovers. The temple is located on the slope of a mountain just outside Hiroshima. You can get there in 20-50 minutes depending on the location of your hotel. Starting from the Mitaki JR Station: exit the station and walk left for a couple of minutes until you get to the intersection, turn right and follow the road uphill. Soon you will find yourself in front of the Saigan-ji temple. Have a quick look, the temple was closed but the grounds were nice. Then continue on the right of the temple. If you have plenty of time - explore the cemetery which you will see on the left side after a few minutes. Otherwise keep walking uphill until you reach the entrance to the temple complex. The path to the main building winds through beautiful forest and is surrounded with endless pieces of art. The forest is literally filled with beautiful old sculptures. The main temple itself has some really strong wooden sculptures, some of the best you will find anywhere. If you love nature and have time - follow the path uphill from the main temple to get to the top of the mountain. There are some views there, which are not bad, but the main attraction is just the walk through the forest. Allow 3-4 hours at least, I spent half a day in the area and didn't want to leave. There were only a few other visitors there. A hidden gem, incredibly beautiful combination of art and nature.

Daishoin Temple

What I like about Japanese religion and its places of worship is that they treat them serious. In terms of cleanliness, architectural beauty and uniqueness of style and craftsmanship are they really wondrous sights to behold and therefore always worth a visit. Then again they don't seem to dogmatic about it and don't try to convert you every step along the way. Same goes for Daishoin temple, which was a spectacular sight in fall colors and, by the way, made for some of our best photos taken during our Japan trip. Absolute pleasure this place!

Fukuzen-ji Temple

Reviewed By smsadat - Hiroshima, Japan

This is an old temple with a magnificent view of the sea and you can see the islands by sitting there from its hall. I think this a breathtaking view from its hall for passing some lazy times. There is a small souvenir shop in the temple. We also see a small exhibition of group photographs of the Shoguns at the end of the Tokugawa period. Our guide explains everything in the inside of the temple. This is also used for resting place for Korean correspondent during the Edo period, as per I remember from my guide.

Itsukushima Shrine Torii

Reviewed By danielncf0717 - Taipei, Taiwan

What pops into people's mind when one thinks of the country Japan? Mt Fuji, Hot Spring, Kimono, the list goes on and on, and I bet a lot of people will think of Japanese Torii Gates, the beautiful architectures commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine. If you like Torii and you are planning to go to Hiroshima, don't ever miss this magnificent Torii in the sea! On the island Miyajima, there is this famous Itsukushima Shrine with an enormous Torii in the sea, and if you stay long enough and time it right, you can approach it when the tide goes out. It's currently under renovation though
