From your first glimpse of the magnificent structure from blocks away to the breath-taking view when you enter the square surrounding this gigantic almost-eerie Gothic monument, it is truly overwhelming and awe-inspiring. My opinion is that it surpasses it's namesake - Notre Dame in Paris. Inside, the huge rose window, the pipe organ, the astrological clock all are simply amazing - especially when you consider they are all 5 or 6 centuries old.

Right in the heart of town in a beautiful square. Separate bell tower and amazing structures made from wood by original ship builders. Sitting inside you feel as if you are in an old ship.

Bordeaux's cathedral is massive Gothic pile, very reminiscent to us of many other Gothic churches we visited around France and Spain. But there was also plenty more about St Andre's to ensure we did not succumb to 'cathedral overload' here. Its towering spires, highly decorated doorways and flying buttresses all catch your eye from the square outside, while from the inside the ribbed vaults of the soaring ceiling and the light shining through the stained-glass windows are awe-inspiring. Best of all though were the cathedral's magnificently decorative rose windows. Also of note is that Eleonor of Aquitaine married here in 1137.

The Abbey at Mont Saint Michel is one of the most impressive locations I have visited in the 30 odd countries I have visited! The location and the history are fascinating and the quaint shops and restaurants make it a perfect place to visit on a (long) day trip from Paris by fast train. Exploring the abbey was one of the highlights of my trip and I highly recommend it to anyone although the stairs and steepness of the site may challenge some.

When we decided to explore Toulouse, we headed directly to the Musee d'Archaeologie ...and found it right beside the basilica...so after the museum we toured it as well. A lovely church with and interesting crypt with reliquaries...always great to immerse in local history.

This beautiful cathedral has a summer 22.00 light and music show for around 35 minutes The transformation on the cathedral facade is exceptional and extremely well performed. I would definitely recommend this free show

It’s a steep climb up to the basilica with stations of the cross along the way. Well worth it for the views over all of Marseille. It looked as though a little tourist train goes though if you don’t want to do the walk. The basilica itself is beautifully decorated with mosaics and full of a variety of thankful donations, including ship and plane models hanging from the ceiling, medals, paintings and many many marble plaques. We enjoyed reading those! People’s thanks range from being saved from submarine bombardment in the war through being healed of an ulcer to passing an exam. There’s also a crypt, gift shop, restaurant and museum but we didn’t go to the restaurant or museum. They crypt is full of votive candles and the gift shop is crowded but has a good selection of postcards.
