Top 10 restaurants in Windhoek, Namibia

August 14, 2017 Moriah Teneyck

Many visitors to Namibia start their adventure in Windhoek, the capital and largest city of this South African country. Nama, Herero, German, Afrikaans, and British cultures have influenced the growth and development of Windhoek. Visit the statue of Hosea Kutako, a nationalist hero, in the gardens surrounding the Tintenpalast, the seat of the Namibian legislature, or chow down on ostrich kebab or zebra steak at Joe’s Beerhouse before leaving on a safari into the Namibian wilderness.

Nice Restaurant & Bar

CURRENTLY CLOSED, Reopening mid 2018!

In addition to being a commercial restaurant and venue for functions, NICE also serves as the Living Classroom for trainees honing their skills in the culinary arts and food & beverage service. Many years ago, the land that NICE sits on was once a family home for the Bruckners. The family were prominent in the business community and in the mid 1980's started purchasing land near Sossusvlei while the sheep industry began to fall. The idea was the establish a conservation area free of fences to help restore the land. His son, Stephan, utilised the land to establish a commercial business, Wolwedans, which has grown into a successful collection of camps and lodges promoting ecotourism. However, the problem of finding qualified Namibians in the culinary and hospitalisty industry to employ was always present. Therefore, Stephan Bruckner transformed the home in which he grew up in into the Namibian Institute of Culinary Education

We went here with somewhat high expectations as it came highly recommended. The ambiance is lovely and the decor and layout fabulous...that’s where I stop with the compliments. Of the five starters on the menu, only one was available. Main course took an hour and a half to come. It was good that we were still avoided by the time the food came we are not really interested anymore. If this is the standard from the Namibian Culinary Institution, they are in serious trouble.

To write a review which is negative does not go very well into my own books but unfortunately this needs to be done sometimes. I am a "Namibian-Holic" as a guest named me approximately two weeks ago, the reason? I can not stop "bragging" about Namibia overall and it is with sadness that I have to write this review however, I hope, trust and believe that the Management and Owner will act to change the service positively and productively as soon as possible as I would wish to return and write another review as soon as possible to over-ride what I am about to say.
At the Craft Cafe I have waited far too long for service from a waiter/waitress to start with and no, it was after the early morning client rush and long before lunch would have been there-for it was relaxed and quiet as there were only a few people, some visitors to Namibia at that stage when I seated myself. I prefer quiet times as I am always running against time due to the fact that I run a shuttle service.
When I do find a cafe, restourant or a bistro which is quiet, I make sure to stop and use the opportunity to have an early or late lunch, whichever is possible.
As the waiter arrived after some time the first fact I made sure he understood is that I am truly in a hurry due to a next transfer and I have limited time which he confirmed. I only ordered an Earl Grey Tea and a simple toast Sandwich, bacon and egg without the side dish which I could have, but to save time I kept to my first choice.
The waiter assured me that this order would not take a lot of time and I was totally disappointed when I waited 20 minutes for my tea at first and then the milk was forgotton whith the waiter rushing off to another table. It took me about 3 minutes to have his attention and request where my milk is. With the including time of the tea after 45 minutes I once again called upon the waiter requesting why it is taking so long for such an easy and quick order after which he disappeared for at least another 5 minutes before returning with this excuse," Mam, it takes time to make the egg as it has to bake on the one side and then it should be turned and bake on the other side".
Hallo!!! 45 minutes to bake an egg??? Then, how long will it take to make the toast and the bacon, another 45 minutes? What will happen once lunch time is upon them? Do they ever finish any order?
After another 10 minutes I left my table and as I made my way to the counter to cancel the order and pay the tea, the waiter came rushing out the door with the toast on a plate. Within this time the Manager paid me a visit with the same explanation as the waiter. At first I felt like declining the toast but being the person I am, I accepted a take away and paid in full.
I should have declined as when I had the time to take a bite I found I could play ball with the egg, use the bacon as a knife and needed liquid to get the food down as it was as dry as a piece of wood ready to use for barbeque.
To crown my disappointment my eye caught a certificate of excellence send by TripAdviser as I left. At this stage I can not advise any visitor to make this a pitstop but I truly hope and trust that Management would seriously consider stepping up service as I would like to go back and write a completely opposite review afterwards.

Although the restaurant is open to the public, on a Sunday evening it looked as if most diners, like us, were also staying at the hotel where it is located. Some TA reviewers have complained about slow service but our experience was at the other extreme. Our starters emerged only seconds after we ordered them and before we had taken a first sip of our drinks. Just a few minutes later our waitress was back at the table, waiting to take our plates away even though my wife's cutlery was still in her hands.
Food was better than anticipated: a starter of crispy hake croquettes served on a red pepper coulis; mains of beef or (rather chewy) oryx fillet, both coated in the same heavy wine and onion sauce; a hot chocolate fondant served with red berry sauce or caramelised apple crumble with Amurula ice cream. We struggled with wine choices since there was little available other than by the bottle but both house white and red selections, available in 175 ml measures, were very good.
Our total bill came to 917 Namibian dollars - just over £55. This was excellent value for 3 courses and the equivalent of a full bottle of wine. If the enthusiastic servers could just be given a little more training then this would be a much improved restaurant.

We arrived early at the hotel and had a light lunch on the beautiful Terrace to forget the airline food. This was already very good; very attentive staff, nice dishes, in all a promising beginning of (in part the culinary) delights of Namibia. Will put the hotel restaurant to a test tonight.
