Heading to the Lincoln Theater we wanted to be sure we could enjoy dinner and not miss the opening of the show. Called for reservations and received a confirmation for 5:45 p.m.. Arrived at 5:40 and seated immediately...so far so good. Our waitress asked immediately 'are you going to the show tonight at Lincoln Theater'? Yes! Thanks for asking. She went on to say that they had a 'special menu' of items that could be prepared and served in 'less time' and might be a good choice for dinner.

Perfect - especially since the abbreviated menu included what we had in mind anyway. We both ordered the Fish and Chips within 5-6 minutes of being seated. The restaurant was indeed 'almost' full in main dining area and I later found out that a few (or more) large groups were in the side room.

Order taken before 6 and ordering from the 'quick' menu we thought 'no problem'. We waited, chatted, waited and as it got to be 6:25 and no dinner - I began to worry. There was no 'update' from the wait staff nor management about the delay. My cousin asked if our dinner would be out soon and the reply was "I'll check...I think so".

Thinking about going on to the Lincoln Theater without dinner....our meal arrived at 6:40. The Fish and Chips were nicely presented, served hot and quite tasty. We asked for the bill and a request for some vinegar which was acknowledged however never delivered.

Just before (quickly) finishing dinner- I took the two checks to the bar/cashier with credit cards included. We finished dinner and went to the bar to sign for the dinners and the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed ....they completed the transactions just shortly before 7. I did overhear a conversation with another group of diners and the wait staff to say ' we are a little short staffed tonight and one of our chefs called in' (sick? unable to work? whatever).

Based on prior reviews, I suspect we caught The Speakeasy on a really 'off' night. As mentioned above, the food was served hot and was quite good...service (no updates on delays- no management intervention) was below average to poor. I fully understand that 'things happen" - sometimes out of managements' control - being updated as to the kitchen situation would have been most appreciated.

Not sure if I will return to The Speakeasy.....however maybe a 2nd chance is in the future.

If you are looking for a reasonably priced, delicious meal, you can't go wrong here. They offer pizzas, subs, burgers, salads. We had a fairly large group. Most everyone ordered something different. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Wait staff was knowledgeable and very patient with our large group. This restaurant is a part of the General Francis Marion Hotel. However, not overly priced like many hotel restaurants. Definitely will return when I'm back in the area.

Dip Dog Stand

Reviewed By bwodom - South Carolina

We were visiting the Marion area for several weeks, and kept hearing folks talk about the Dip Dog Stand so we decided to give it a try. The place has been around for 60 years. There are all sorts of citations and ribbons on the walls to attest to its popularity. The layout reminded me of the lobster shacks in NE: order from the window, then go around to a separate eating area (or take out).

I assumed a Dip Dog was essentially a corn dog, which it is but the batter is a bit different. The batter is also thinner and the hot dog is one of those little red hots, so it is a pretty small serving. You really need two to get a good taste! Which do I prefer, the corn dog or dip dog? Both were good, but I think I like the more substantive batter of a good corn dog vs. the thinner version of the Dip Dog. Just personal preference...the taste was really quite good.

Hubby's polish sausage was very good. Fries were good but nothing other world. We had ice cream for dessert. I had the custard, hubby had sundae. Custard was not as rich as I had expected, but was okay. Hubby enjoyed the sundae and gave the staff a thumbs up for knowing how to make one the right way -- layering the syrup rather than just squirting it on the top.

The lady behind the order window seemed as if she might be new...or distracted. But in the end, she did get the order right. Wait time was reasonable.

The dining area is pretty basic...clean your own table when you leave. There is a gift shop which is pretty small and chocked full of the same kind of thing you see at most of the mountain souvenir shops. However, you can get yourself a Dip Dog hat or t-shirt to prove your love!

All in all, it's a good local place to get hamburgers and hot dogs, but am not sure I would drive too far out of the way to get one.

Macado's

Reviewed By Toby H - Western NC

My wife and I recently spent three nights in Marion, VA and found downtown had closed down for the Labor Day weekend. Macado's was the only restaurant open downtown Sunday night so we ate here. We were promptly greeted and seated. There were no craft beers on tap and our server did not have a craft beer list, so he brought one of each of the local bottled or canned craft beers they had on hand. We each made a selection and found the beers to be quite good. I didn't realize Macado's was a chain restaurant until my wife read about other locations on the menu. Their menu is pretty extensive and the normal fare you expect to see in a sports themed restaurant/bar. The burgers came highly recommended so we each ordered a cheese burger. We were able to select the type of cheese we wanted along with other condiments. The burgers arrived and were a massive 8 ounce, thick and juicy burger. These were very tasty and our server continued to check on us throughout the meal. Our server was very attentive and the burgers and beer were good. The restaurant could have been a little cleaner, but all in all, we enjoyed our experience here.

Been by this restaurant many times but between the name and strange signage on the windows always avoided it. Seeing a large family exiting we decided to try! Surprisingly nice inside, low key but comfortable.
Service was excellent, menu heavy with Sushi choices. We just had fried rice with shrimp and we're pleased at the amount and size of the shrimp. Also nice were the pretty plates that were used.
Nice stop off I-81 too with a great antique store nearby.
