Entebbe is a major town in Central Uganda. On a Lake Victoria peninsula, approximately 37 kilometres (23 mi) southwest of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, it was once the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda prior to independence, in 1962. Entebbe is the location of Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's largest commercial and military airport, best known for the dramatic rescue of 100 hostages kidnapped by the resistance group of the PFLP-EO and Revolutionary Cells (RZ) organizations. Entebbe is also the location of State House, the official office and residence of the President of Uganda.

Easy to find, easy parking, friendly staff. Excellent setting next to the lake. Sandy setting with lonely views. No swimming. Excellent pizzas and excellent fish dishes. We had an excellent visit and the place lived up to expectations. No frills top quality lunch spot.

We visited 2 times recently, both times disappointed with the service and the quantity of food. They took lot of time and the food is also bad. They took one hour gap between the starter and main course. It's a terrible experience and no proper management.

After flying for nearly 20 hours, you want two basic things: a hot shower and a cold beer--in whatever order. But then you also want a bed that doesn't feel like a cement slab, and you want something decent to eat to compensate for all the starchy airline meals. When you have staff that rush out to take your bags and usher you to private cottage that is tasteful, fragrant with jasmine and petals strewn across the linens, you feel special, royal and welcomed.
The cottage balconies are tucked away just so--your only neighbours are the nesting sunbirds and hornbills above. This is the best place for sleepy morning coffee--which can be delivered to your outdoor table.
Back to the showers--they are steamy. There is no water interruption or lukewarm letdown typical of other Ugandan hotels. The design is one that we'd like to recreate in a future home with a pebble bottom and exposed stone walls.
Unfortunately one of our bags didn't travel with us all the way from Toronto--it was mysteriously held up in Addis Ababa for five days. The staff at Gately were diligent in calling the Entebbe airport every few hours to track the bag. Gately's driver, Julius, went to the airport twice to check baggage on incoming flights (even at 1am). He took my partner back the following morning to check arriving luggage again--to no avail. This could have really soured our experience--as we were travelling without a phone or computer, it was wonderful to have a hotel that was so helpful in assisting us--the manager even provided us with her own stash of shampoo and conditioner.
But, baggage aside--waking up at Gately instills calm. Yes, there is traffic--Entebbe is growing, and the entire area is seeing an influx of vehicles and construction. In the very near future a mall will be opening directly across from Gately. Despite being a mild nuisance now, guests will no doubt appreciate the proximity of a mall to purchase forgotten items, western staples and Diesel jeans!
Tucked in the Gately restaurant, behind the verdant vines and blooms, the lounge area is still a great place to recoup. I stayed at Gately in 2008--I met the Thai cook who inspired the menu that is heavy with Thai dishes--lots of curries, the best golden spring rolls and soups. As the traveller's demands change, so does the menu--and now Gately has an impressive line-up of burgers too (with a lovely coriander--yogurt condiment). If you want pub-style fare, there are chicken lollipops and fish fingers, samosas and a fancy version of the infamous Ugandan rolex.
We stayed four nights and ate our way happily through the menu. The green curry and pad Thai were easy faves--though the burg and fries were also top notch. I'd also play favourites with the Cobb salad loaded with bacon and blue cheese and local avo.
Breakfasts are a delight--stacks of pancakes with honey and crushed peanuts, granola and fresh fruit or the British hangover style--with beans, sausage and eggs. The portions are stuffing--you won't need to eat again until dinner.
At Gately, you are quick walking distance to everything necessary to see--an artisan's market is just across the street, the Botanical Gardens, the zoo, boats to Ngamba Island and Anderita Beach. There's even an IMAX theatre in Entebbe now (15 minute walk). You can flag a matatu to Kampala just outside the door or arrange for a private hire through the hotel. It's really the ideal spot to be and to chill out before or after flying home.
Or, as the Gately motto suggests, "Relax, you're at home."
The restaurant has a smooth soundtrack and the on-site gallery shop is perfect for finding truly unique take-home gifts that can't be found on the roadside. Everything here from the menu to the shop's inventory to the goat skin seat covers and pillow fabric has been curated with a serious design mind.

Our group had our last dinner in Uganda here just before departing the country. I think that a lot of people have dinner here before going to the airport. Very good service, quite fast for Uganda. Very good, if not exceptional food. Fair prices. Lovely location overlooking the lake.

There is no long wait for your food. Our menu offers a variety of dishes influenced from various countries around the world. Our menu includes fresh salads, sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas; homemade dips and chips, light bites such as samosas, spring rolls, vegetable soups, spicy meatballs and chicken wings. Our main courses include beer marinated t-bone, pepper crusted steak fillet, steak stuffed with spinach, mushroom and feta, chicken kievs and the ultimate burgers as well as many other dishes. Our Seating is mostly outside which with Uganda's weather is perfectly suitable. The Gardens have one of the best views in Entebbe with the red African sun setting over Lake Victoria. Takeaways and deliveries are also available as well as guest rooms for overnight visitors.

I had been to Carpe Diem many times since about 3 years now and I still appreciate staying, eating or drinking coffre there. The place is small but very lovely, the service is quiet perfect and over all it’s very clean and offers very nice view

The decor here is great, what a lovely bar! Visited here twice, first time for Tilapia which was gorgeous. Second time the owner (James) cooked us a traditional English Roast dinner! What a guy! Highly recommend it here!

I thought maybe dining in a Thai Restaurant my first night in Uganda was a bit unusual, but it was a superb choice! I didn't even venture inside, just sat right at the beautiful outdoor tables and perused the menu. Everything was clean, clean, clean. The surrounding Gardens were well-tended and beautiful. A mom and baby vervet relaxed in the trees. The drinks were cold and refreshing. The outdoor temperature was perfect with no bugs (late September). The service was excellent and the food so tasty. The owner came out and greeted us later and was super friendly. Just across the road was Lake Victoria. Couldn't have asked for a better dining experience.

Cafe Javas at Victoria mall is the ideal for family, friends. Be it for two or 30 people they will give you the best. For their quality and service the price is just appropriate. Location super, parking enough. Ambience good. Staff are always at your service
