8 Things to Do in Entebbe That You Shouldn't Miss

November 1, 2017 Janette Largent

Entebbe is a major town in Central Uganda. On a Lake Victoria peninsula, approximately 37 kilometres (23 mi) southwest of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, it was once the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda prior to independence, in 1962. Entebbe is the location of Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's largest commercial and military airport, best known for the dramatic rescue of 100 hostages kidnapped by the resistance group of the PFLP-EO and Revolutionary Cells (RZ) organizations. Entebbe is also the location of State House, the official office and residence of the President of Uganda.

The Ugandan Wildlife Education centre was formed in 1994 having previously functioned as a zoo.In 2015 the "U.W.E.C(Uganda Wildlife Education Centre)" received the"World Association of Zoo's and Aquaria " award from among all the zoo's in the world.I was one of the first entrants into the zoo and decided to do the "Behind the scenes" wildlife tour which cost U.S $ 70.. Akin to a National park safari we a group of 5 tourists and a guide were driven in a open mini van around the zoo stopping at enclosures on the route . We began at the Ostrich enclosure where young zoo-keeper Mr Richard.Kaahwa explained us the importance of this wildlife education centre in conserving Uganda's wildlife.Got To feed a giraffe, pet a cheetah and also the White rhino's.The 6 month old rescued African baby elephant "Edward" was cute and hilarious.Got to pet the endangered Shoebill Stork also simultaneously being educated on woldlife conservation in Uganda. The visit to the Chimpanzee enclosure was just too good to be true.A group of Chimpanzees are resident in the enclosure with all of them being rescued animals from either the illegal pet trade or bankrupt circuses.A large water moat formed a natural enclosure while a net covered the top of this large artificial island enclosure.A must visit for all nature lovers.

We chose the 12 day excursion as it provided a range of sights and destinations within Uganda that we were interested in. Our communication with Ivan was timely, professional and informative and confirmed for us that his company would provide the experience we sought. After initial communication, any Reservations we held were quickly dispensed with.
Francis, our guide and driver was the consummate professional. His history and cultural knowledge of Uganda together with an intimate knowledge of the wildlife and flora ensured we had the best experience of everything there was to offer. Nothing was too much trouble and he went out of his way to ensure our time on safari was as memorable as possible. He has a happy disposition which made us feel welcome and at ease throughout our journey and our discussions on life and cultures were most enlightening and entertaining-a funny man with strong cultural beliefs. Francis was a careful and thoughtful driver over some pretty rough and dusty roads but we looked forward to each day in his beloved "black hawk". He is a skilled and knowledgeable professional and a credit to the company.
Our midrange accommodation was very comfortable and well beyond our expectations. The staff were as friendly and helpful as we have experience throughout the world. Similarly, the cuisine was exceptional and a credit to the staff involved.
Our overall impression was Gorillas and Wildlife Safaris is a great company to deal, Francis was the perfect guide/driver and the people of Uganda are friendly, welcoming and as obliging as anywhere we have experienced around the world. A fantastic adventure for my wife and I.

It's a lovely park - a little run down, yes, but still full of birds, monkeys, and all kinds of plants. The plants aren't well marked so it's worth getting a guide to show you around - there were a lot of things I think I might have missed if I hadn't paid for the guide. I paid 10,000 shillings to enter and another 10,000 for the guide.

We spent 2 days on the island of Buggala and loved it! The ferry from Entebbe drops you off in Lutoboka where all the nice resorts are. The actual town of Kalangala is not waterfront and a simple Ugandan town.
Tip for budget travellers: We stayed at King Fisher campground, cheap and perfect since it's right next to the pier and town. That way you can hang in town and get some local food, which is a must! We then went to the Kalangala Pearl because it has an absolutely gorgeous pool and grounds overlooking the lake (you can get pool access for 10,000 per person but we negotiated it to 5,000). The island itself is green and gorgeous but the Beaches aren't really existent - some patches about 2 feet wide of grainy sand - so a pool is welcomed.
Finally, they say there isn't much to do, but we spent 4 hours doing a tour on a motorbike with Abraham Thompson (his contact info is on the wall of one of the restaurants right by the pier) visiting a pineapple farm, some view points, palm tree plantations, he talked to us about the people and the culture, we visited a medium who stays in a "sacred" cave... Great way to get to know the people.

The mall is in an easy location. There are a few different restaurants, including Cafe Javas and a food court. They don't currently have groceries, but they are putting in a Shoprite. Other than that, there are clothing stores, technology stores, and even a nutrition/vitamin store. There is a movie theater, a gym, and a kids' play place, too. There are several ATMs on the ground floor.
Everyone who enters must go though a metal detector and have their bag checked. There are security guards in the mall, too, so it feels safe.
There is plenty of parking.

Aero Beach

Reviewed By Flynboat - NE Indiana

Lakefront restaurant, airplane "displays", music and drinks in old setting. But close your eyes, then enjoy a step back in time when the Army Air Corps service men and women, danced and partied just off the airfield at the lake. You can feel the buildings, the trees and grounds just full of stories. There was a small entry fee to come in; and the staff was working on restoring some of the buildings, because clearly the "golden days" were in the past. In the afternoon, there was reggae style and other music playing along the beach front old dance hall, as locals played soccer on the beach around tables and chairs along the shore, statues and displays, with stationary relics of transport plans, play grounds, and the local Aero Beach restaurant which featured reportedly fresh fish from the lake, fried and darkened but with good flavor with a local beer and friends to soak in all the ambiance of a by-gone-era. There are other Beaches, no doubt, and I'd thought with the entry fee, the place might have been better maintained, but I am inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt as it was after Christmas and New Years when the season may have been slow and they were working on the upkeep. Statues of perhaps famous people, wild animals, and others along with a large yard area for kids to play. It was an interesting little side trip, and IF YOU LIKE OLD BUILDINGS AND OLD AIRPLANES, it might be worth taking a little "R & R" break at Aero Beach on Entebbe Bay.
