...we’d be regulars. The landlady is lovely. The pub dog friendly. Admittedly, we were ‘Britstoppers’, so we stayed in our motorhome in the car park overnight. You don’t get pubs like this anymore- it’s a boozer, no pretensions, no ifs, buts or maybe and certainly no compromises. Bar full of chatty locals, improv on the piano and local beers were very quaffable. It’s shabby, not chic, tired and unkempt but so am I at 61 and I’m worth knowing (I think). If you’re into an authentic experience in a pub which is a dying breed, then make the effort. I bet summers outside are lovely. It’s well worth it. Thankyou for letting us stay, if we’re back this way anytime, we’ll definitely call in again.

My partner & I visited here tea time, the restaurant was quite empty at the time, after waiting 40 minutes for our food it turned up black. Sausages were cremated, after complaining we were offered a 'free pudding' which we declined, we were totally put off & lost our appetites, we found the staff weren't interested & wernt offered a reduction in our bill, This wasn't the first time we have had problems with the food here but reluctantly gave it another chance (BIG MISTAKE!!) I will NEVER eat here again & strongly advise anybody to do the same, the other dishes we ordered were tasteless, we were told the mash potato was from a packet!! (Smash) I thought that wasn't available anymore. Don't waste your money!!!!

Came here on spec, was busy and although there were a couple of empty tables we were told that a large party were expected and they couldn’t take any further bookings until after 8pm, fair enough so we had a drink in the rather featureless bar and waited, we were then seated promptly but had to wait a little before our orders were taken, we decided to forego starters because they were busy and just ordered mains, a gammon and a chicken and leek pie. We were pleased we hadn’t ordered the starters as they were large portions. The food was very good, loads of chicken in the pie with ‘proper chips’ veg and a jug of gravy, large gammon steak all very tasty. Service was polite and friendly and good value. We had seen a couple of local bad reviews but are now reassured that the food is still good and we will return.

Probably the restaurant we go to most regularly in Barrow and sadly the worst its ever been. Our booking was lost so we had to wait, our order was wrong, it took ages to come. We were so hungry by then we just ate.All a shame as the food tasted superb. The venison burger wss great as were all the chicken dishes. To go along with an excellent selection of beers both bottled and draft. The spirits selection isnt bad either along with a friendly/busy atmosphere. Putting the delays and lost booking as having an off day.Hi Joep735, thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. Please accept our apologies for the loss of your booking and the confusion with your order, which resulted in the wrong meals being brought to you. Although we make every effort to insure every customer has the perfect dining experience, both human and technical errors can occur. We hope that your next dining experience at the Duke meets your every expectation. Best regards.

On a recent visit to Barrow friends took me for Sunday Lunch to The Crown at North Scale. My friends pre-booked a table as it is a very popular location for meals, especially Sunday lunch. Staff were friendly and efficient and we spent a pleasant hour and a half enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. The food was well prepared, tasty and definitely plentiful. I ordered the shrimp cocktail which came with enough shrimp for two – but being somewhat of a pig I managed to eat the whole lot. For the main course I chose the Roast Beef Sunday Lunch which came with mashed and roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, a variety of veggies, gravy and five or six slices of tender roast beef. They certainly don’t stint on the amount they serve on the plate and it’s all totally delicious.I’ll definitely be returning on my next trip to Barrow.
