Top 10 Private Tours in Areni, Vayots Dzor Province

July 2, 2021 Yuk Petri

Areni (Armenian: Արենի; formerly Arpa) is a village in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. It is best known for its wine production, although the majority of wine produced locally is from the nearby village of Getap. The church of S. Astvatsatsin is a single-nave two-aisled domed Armenian church completed in the year 1321, and is located atop a plateau overlooking the Arpa River and Areni. It was designed by the architect and sculptor Momik who is best known for his high-relief carvings at the monastery of Noravank (located approximately 6 kilometers southeast from Areni). Nearby are also the 13th century ruins of lord Tarsaitch Orbelian of Syunik's palace, moved from Yeghegis to Areni during that time. Ruins of a 13th-century bridge built by Bishop Sarkis in 1265-1287 are one kilometer northeast of the church. At the same location are the remains of an older bridge.

Khor Virap is the place where Grigor Luisavorich (St. Gregory the Illuminator) was imprisoned for 13 years before curing King Trdat III of a disease. This caused the adoption of Christianity in Armenia in the year 301. In fact, the name Khor Virap means “deep pit”, named after the prison where St. Gregory the Illuminator was held. The next stop will be Monastery Noravank, which dates back to XIII—XIV centuries. The complex includes the 1339 St. Astvatsatsin (“Burtelashen”) sepulchre-church, St. Stepanos Nakhavka and gavit, the St. Grigor Church and Stepanos Orbelian Sepulchre, the remains of medieval chapels and residential quarters and a modern office and hall.  In the end of our trip you have an opportunity to taste armenian wine in Areni winery.

Note: the private tour also included a trip to Echmiadzin and the Arch of Charents. This was a wonderful tour that I would recommend to anyone visiting Armenia interested in learning about its rich culture and history. My driver, Alen, and my guide, Eduard, were great to spend the day with, and I enjoyed every moment of the tour. Each site truly is magnificent, and most are unlike anything you will see elsewhere in the world. This really is a unique opportunity to view history. Additionally, I must note that the Armenian people are incredibly hospitable. At one point, we pulled over on the side of the road to watch some ladies make traditional Armenian bread (which was delicious). Upon stopping, I was invited to join a group of Armenian men that were enjoying the bread with some delicious Armenian cheese. They even gave me a shot of vodka, really highlighting just how kind everyone here is and how much they appreciate meeting other people and learning about other cultures. Do not miss out on this tour if you are in Armenia!

120 km from Yerevan, on the left bank of the r. Arpa Vayots-Dzorsky marz of Armenia, stretched tiny village Areni - the object of pilgrimage for connoisseurs of vintage wines and unique monuments of architecture. Beginning in 2009, the village hosts an annual international wine festival - a large-scale cultural event devoted to tasting young and aged wines of local bottling, in particular the products of the Areni Winery winery, founded in 1994 on the basis of a small family business.

It is said by the locals that if Sevan Dries up ever, the country will be dead in 40 days. Lake Sevan is not only the lifeline of the Armenians, but it is also by far the most beautiful place I have seen. For the monastery, one has the climb 200 odd stairs but it's worth the climb as once you are on the top the view is mesmerizing.
