Top 10 Points of Interest & Landmarks in Western Kyoto, Kinki

June 13, 2021 Flossie Demartino

The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

Bamboo Forest Street

Reviewed By Traveller20175 - Arizona, United States

We visited the Arashiyama bamboo forest area with the Tenryu ji temple and surrounding areas, which made for a good afternoon sightseeing trip. We went around 6 pm and there were no so many tourists, which helped us walk the forest in sometimes almost solitude. We got pictures with nobody else being in the path, which I think made me really like the place. Different places that has the bamboo paths, some are more crowded than the others, walk a little, explore the area a little and combine with nearby temples and tasting the cherry blossom ice cream to have a great afternoon.

The Bamboo Forest Trail

It is a crowded trail but I think it is worth to have a look. Reasonable flat trail with lots of photo opportunity. It is 10-15 mins walk from the train station. So serene and dreamy.

Arashiyama Kimono Forest

It is something you don’t see ever day. It is heaps of cylinders with fabric inside along a pathway which leads you to a dragon pond. It is said that if you immerse your hands in the water you will get a heart of happiness. Something different

Arashiyama Arhat

Reviewed By Higuma2017 - Australia, null

Ghosts and caterpillars! When arriving from the rapids upstream and making your way from the boat pier in Arashiyama towards the Tenryu-ji temple, do take the first road north, by the parking lot. You will come across this lovely little garden on the road side, populated by dozens of statues of wise old men, perhaps monks or deities, and some with the most respectable eyebrows gathered together in the same place since a family reunion of Tufir Harwat, from Dune. Massive catterpillars! Among these Halfling-sized stone sculptures, you will spot the bulging bald head of Fururokuju and all the Seven Lucky Gods, and many other characters, happy and angry, peaceful and fierce, including one whose face is opening out as a shell to reveal another face inside. I could not resist but take so many pictures of those haunting faces. And if you are walking by at dusk or night time, do not be spooked out if you have the impression that some of them are missing, or one or another is moving. It is not your eyes. These ghosts are indeed common occurrences in the garden of Arashiyama Arhat.
