Top 10 Onsen Resorts in Tokyo, Kanto

September 29, 2021 Alice Mieles

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

The most relaxing and special experience. They are trialling letting in visitors with tattoos. Any tattoos larger than about the size of a hand need to be covered with a flesh tone, waterproof, plastic bandage that can be purchased from the reception for a couple hundred yen. The staff were so friendly and all spoke quite good English. So many different bath options and lots of different add on options like massages etc. Huge relaxation/lounge areas and two restaurants. Simply cannot recommend it highly enough especially if you’re staying in the Shinjuku area.

Odaiba Tokyo Oedo-Onsen Monogatari

Toyko's largest artificial hot spring complex is filled with a seemingly never-ending series bathtubs with different temperatures, textures, and foci, such as the special foot baths.

We wanted to do something authentic on our last full day in Tokyo- after visiting the giant Gundam statue in Odaiba, we decided to head over to Oedo Onsen Monogatari. It was a bit of a walk from the Diver City Plaza, so try to take a bus (I believe there were buses/shuttles running to that area but we walked because it was a nice day). Once you enter, take off shoes, get a wristband (it will be charged each time you purchase something - food, souvenir, extra onsen service) and choose a yukata to wear around the facility. We really liked the outdoor foot bath (included in admission price) and the surrounding gardens, as well as the large tatami room for relaxation. Nice photo opportunities throughout the place. For the two of us, the cost for everything (admission, ice cream, one drink) came to $70 USD. You can also have a meal in the facility (extra charge) and they provide free water/green tea! Overall, a fun and relaxing experience!

Maenohara Onsen Sayano Yudokoro

The Saya-no-yu open-air hot spring is a natural hot spring that is fed non-stop directly from a natural source located 1,500 meters underground. The greenish brown tinge of the water comes from its rich sodium chloride content, which is said to provide excellent thermal effect. It is also called "netsu-no-yu" (thermal bath) for this reason, and is also good for neuralgia, chronic rheumatism, and poor circulation. In addition to Saya-no-yu, there are fourteen other types of baths, plus a ganbanyoku hot stone bath (an additional fee is required for the hot stone bath).

If you like a ryokan (Traditional Japanese style hotel) with hot springs, but you don't have enough time to travel, this is the place to go. It's 30-40 minutes from Shinjuku and the place is a renovated Japanese old residential. They offer tatami rooms, a Japanese garden, and soba noodles in addition to the hot spring. There are many modernized hot springs (called super bath or Spa) in Tokyo, however, this place has a charm that other places don't offer. You get a list band to pay food or other expense and pay at the end. No cosmetic stuff (lotions, etc.) is available. Be aware.
