Maria Islands Nature Reserve

Home to a number of species of rare birds and other wildlife.

The Saint Lucia National Trust takes care of every detail that helps protect the natural habitat of the endemic species and other fauna found on this small island off the south east coast of Saint Lucia. It also takes care that you have informative and lively guides, a safe journey by sea to and from the island and from the shore to the highest point (c.400 ft?) and back to the beach for a swim. A unique place well worth the planning in advance to visit! Bring water/juice, photography gear, leave nothing physical behind and take away memories of a fabulous experience of conservation in practice and amazing views!

My 1st time visiting this place I thought of it as a little piece of heaven on earth. Whether you're a nature lover or just enjoy new experiences, the farm is a peaceful place and host "Wilbert" is very knowledgeable about the different types of birds on the island, their distintive sounds, trees, plants ( afterall he is a farmer ????), and will give you a little piece of history which we enjoyed on our short hike to get a view of the historic Pitons, and the tallest mountain on island " Mount Gimme". Afterwards there was a "farm to table" lunch which was quite delicious. On my second visit we decided to gather some friends and camp to get more out of the experience and visited a waterful near by and explored the property a little bit more. It was all worth it especially at nights where we got to witness such beautiful Astro activity at nights. If you do decide to take up camping, do it. But you are forwarned it get very cold at nights, do not pack light for bedtime. It was a wonderful experience that we would definitely do in the near future. Can't wait.

We did the hike in February, it takes about 1.5 hrs of up and down medium difficulty maintained circuit trail. Great views and the forest is beautiful, a lady who works there was our guide and was very nice to talk to. It was a nice hike as others were either too short (Tet Paul is about a 30 minute walk) or too long. You do not need a 4x4 to get up here, we had a Chevrolet Spark. It's $10usd pp for the guided hike. We had running shoes which were fine, anything but flipflops are workable. Thoroughly enjoyed. We didn't see any parrots BUT - for parrot viewing we found Morne Tabac Parrot Sanctuary, just above Soufriere (5 mins past the Beacon restaurant). Saw loads of Parrots and had an amazing time, might be easier to get to for cruise guests. There's a hiking trail but you can also just walk to the viewing platform. It's $5usd pp. Definitely recommend.
