Mullaghmeen Forest

Reviewed By thisdrinkinglife - Basel, Switzerland

Luckily there was a break in the weather and we finally got a good day for a change. I wanted to start the County Top Challenge and I read that Westmeath's highest peak was in Mullaghmeen, through the Forest. It is 258 metres so its actually the lowest county top in Ireland. A good one to start with I think! The morning was lovely, and the walk through the forest was very relaxing. I brought the son and he loved it, a nice and gentle walk through the forest, with the sun shining through the trees, and the pathway very easy to navigate. We started out on the red route, which is the easiest and shortest of the three routes. It takes you through the forest in a loop back to the car park. The white loop is the longest, and goes right around the forest, and by all accounts is a long walk. The blue walk is the route you need if you want to do the county top, as it leads straight to the summit. I took this one after I was told by some locals that this is the one to take if you need to see the peak. I had started out on the red route so it was lucky I had met some people who put me right. I went up the peak myself, up a small gravel path that leads right to the top. Up there I got to see the surrounding hills and lakes (Lough Lene) of North Westmeath. On a lovely day with a clear blue sky it was a lovely scene in the fresh air, reinvigorating. I joined the gang back at the red route, they took a break waiting for me near the famine grave garden. Overall we spent about an hour and a bit and it was a very enjoyable time walking through the forest. And I got my first county top achieved. One down, 25 more to do! (some counties share peaks!)

Glendeer Pet Farm

Animal interaction at it's best. See all the funny antics of our friendly animals, you will get to feed, pet and even hold some of them. Over 50 species of animals to see, an 1850s cottage, a nature walk and fairy trail, a large outdoor and indoor play area and a soft play toddler area, so there is something for eeryone. Lots to do throughout the year: Summer season runs from March to Sept (please check our website for exact dates), Easter Egg Hunts Easter Sat, Sun and Mon at 3pm, Halloween Spooktastic Event during the mid term break, and foe the month of December the farm is transfered into Ireland's Lapland.

My boyfriend and I went down here for the day and wow! They’ve got so many beautiful animals and you get a bag of feed so you can walk around the farm and feed the animals as you go around! There’s really beautiful animals like alpacas, llama’s, deer, chickens and more! It’s the perfect place to bring kids as there’s a playground and a coffee shop on sight too! Couldn’t highly recommend Glendeer Pet Farm enough!

Royal Canal Way

The Royal Canal Way is a 146km cycle route across Ireland without any hills. It follows the bank of the Royal Canal which was built 1789-1817. The route is on gravel, grass, mud and tarmadadam. Flora and fauna are completely undisturbed. There is some beautiful 18th cent engineering to be seen.

Decided to do a stretch of the local greenway today, 20km from Ballynacarrigy to Ballymahon. Great amenity to have nearby and will be great for the area. One negative I noticed, nothing to do with the actual greenway (which is why I didn't deduct a star). I met around 20 other cyclists/walkers/locals outside their houses. About 5 of the 20 said hello, the others just stared blankly, not very welcoming. If the place is going to be popular with people not from the area it would be no harm for some people to say hello, or at the very least don't stare.

Great place to bring children, they were enthralled with the animals and loved feeding some of them with the food provided. There was also a big sandpit with buckets, spades etc., a playground, go-karts, crazy golf and a picnic area. They didn't want to leave.

Old Rail Trail

Reviewed By Bozeman-Dublin - Trim, Ireland

We had an absolutely lovely cycle on the delightful Old Rail Trail. We went from Castletown Station to Moate and back. I really can't praise the powers that be enough for developing this wonderful amenity. Lovely views of the surrounding countryside and great to be out among the sounds of nature. AIt is really well surfaced and is plenty wide enough to allow faster cyclists by or to allow two way travel.
