Top 10 Museums in Suzhou, Jiangsu

September 17, 2021 Marlin Saiz

Suzhou is a major city on the lower Yangtze known for its canals, bridges, pagodas, and beautiful gardens.  These gardens were built and owned by wealthy families and emperors hundreds of years ago, and make for a pleasant place to wander during nice weather. Suzhou is also a major center for silk production and manufacturing, and a tour of a silk factory here provides an interesting and educational glimpse of this Chinese textile industry. Suzhou is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Six Arts Museum

Six Arts Museum is the Shanghai / Suzhou Region's most astonishing Ancient folk arts museum! Six Arts Museum is devoted to the environmentally friendly rescue, preservation and display of ancient Chinese arts. Located in the beautiful ancient water village of Lili, Six Arts Museum exhibits architectural pieces, stone and wood carvings, and other religious and official pieces from all across China!

One of the most amazing museums I have ever seen. Not that far from my Shanghai starting point in the beautiful river town of Lili. Starting with the eloquently finished exterior, the massive five floor building has been wrapped what must be millions of ancient bricks. The colors and lighting of Six Arts at night is jaw dropping. When you first walk in you immediately notice a giant wall of statues in niches from floor to ceiling and lit up with a showy display of lighting. The layers of details in the displays in the museum are truly incredible. You are walking in and through exhibits and are given the opportunity to interact with and touch most of it. It takes at least 2-3 hours to see all of the floors but I feel like I could have taken more to fully appreciate this museum. I actually met the owner who was delightful and very informative. The museum has new developments planned and he mentioned they will be opening a hotel soon. I strongly recommend this masterpiece to anyone traveling in China!!

The Suzhou Museum is a blend between modern design and the past history of Suzhou. The building itself is Instagram/facebook photo worthy. The Museum is not that big but is worth your 1-2 hours.

Suzhou Silk Museum

Reviewed By BillPNo1 - Friendswood, United States

My Wife and I visited the Suzhou Silk Culture Expo Museum along with our tour group when we were in Suzhou last month. We were treated to an excellent demonstration of all phases of the silk growing, processing, and manufacturing processes. We had hands-on experience with the raw silk right from the silkworm's boll and a view of historic and modern looms and weaving machines. What a learning experience! - and so very interesting. Of course, our tour ended in the display and sales room of silk bedding before we were able to explore the general sales floor of silk apparel. It was a very good experience and almost everyone in the group made purchases of the fine material - even if they had not originally planned to do so. MNany of the group made extensive purchases. Very interesting!
