Al Tinello

Reviewed By SGray75

As an American in a new place, I always get nervous before going to a new restaurant. It's one reason why I tend to eat at the same handful of restaurants every time I go out. One of my co-workers & I decided to venture out of our comfort zone last night and try something new. Al Tinello ended up being the perfect choice for a very leisurely, comfortable dinner out. The restaurant is cozy and warm with a lovely ambiance and pretentious-free decor. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Our waiter was very friendly and spoke English beautifully which helped tremendously since I speak Italian not so beautifully. He was helpful and we allowed him to guide us completely through our meal. We started with sea scallops, seared, and placed on a bed of zucchini cream and roasted red peppers. The scallops were cooked just right, and the sauce was so good, only good manners prevented us from licking our bowls. We went for an old favorite, spaghetti aglio olio è peperoncino (spaghetti with garlic, olive oil, & red pepper). I have eaten a TON of this since moving here - it's one of my favorite things - and this dish was perfectly prepared and seasoned. When you make a dish with only a few ingredients, it's very important that everything is spot-on, and the preparation by Al Tinello did not disappoint. I REALLY wanted to have a second (main) course, but I was nearly full after the pasta, so we had to choose between a second and dessert...we chose dessert. The tiramisu at Al Tinello (as I am discovering is the case at many restaurants) is unique to the restaurant. Although every tiramisu possesses similar basic components, I love that many places put their own spin on it. Al Tinello's tiramisu has amaretti cookies, a pudding-like cream, chocolate sauce, cocoa...delicious! We finished up with a macchiato. So, for two scallop dishes, two spaghetti a.o.p., two tiramisu, two liters of frizzante water, two macchiati, a spritz aperol, and a glass of prosecco, and the cover charge, our bill was very reasonable (50€). We were very pleased with our meal and the service, and we cannot wait to go back with our husbands in tow!

This restaurant was referred to me by the Italian owner of a local pub. Since it's out in the country, not far from downtown and off the GPS grid, I made a special dry run to make sure I could find it in the dark. I spoke to Franco, one of the two owners, about the GPS problem and showed up about 7:30 pm. It was a foggy night but I found it at the end of a narrow road. Franco's brother, Loris, carefully explained each available course to me and I selected the appetizer of polenta with cheese and mushrooms, a second course of ravioli stuffed with pumpkin/squash, and for the main course I selected the local rabbit (coniglio) dish. With water and half a carafe of a full red wine, I finished the meal in short order. I remain very impressed with the quality and flavors of the local fare I sampled and the service I received. I did not try any dessert since my waistline is growing in Italy by leaps and bounds. In my opinion this place deserves a much higher ranking in comparison to other local restaurants. The atmosphere of the old farm house is lovely and unique in itself and appears to be unmatched in the area. I highly recommend a visit here for lunch or dinner.

they specialize in fish dishes at his restaurant. Fish of impeccable quality; very nicely arranged. My husband does not eat fish and for him they prepared a well grilled steak called a 'tagliata' with potatoes, zucchini, artichokes and radicchio as side dishes. I had 2 'antipasti' which were delicious. Good value for your money!!

The other evening was the third time I ate here. Twice before for lunch. While the lunches had been of good quality and a wide variety of plates available, I did not have that impression a few nights ago. The menu is not in written form, but was read to us. Common practice in a lot of restaurants around here. No problem! However, my husband and I arrived before our friends did. There was one other table close to us where 6 guests were seated. We were listening to the menu being read to them in order to already get an idea of what to order. About 15 minutes later, our friends had arrived and it was our turn to order. A lot less options than the other table. I guess they ran out of food already at 8 pm. I ordered ricotta and artichokes as an appetizer which was very nice. Also the pork was good. My husband had the 'guanciale' which was very tasty but nothing that would make us want to come back to this place. Altogether there was a total of 4 main dishes to choose from. Tripe, baccala', pork roast and the beef 'guanciale'. I would have liked to have had lamb chops that I had eaten there before, but they weren't available. Also no steaks! The fairly big restaurant was hardly heated. We sat next to the fireplace and still were cold. Only 3 tables occupied on a Sat night; maybe also an indication that price/ value is not the best. (At the 2 lunches I mentioned before, my friend and I were the only customers). I was also taken aback a bit by the fact, that the young waitress who served us prosecco at first, waited for us to finish the white wine and then poured red wine into the same glasses. Not up to standard for a place where you pay roughly 40 Euro pp. There are plenty of places in this area where one gets much better service for that kind of money.

My wife and myself have stopped in here twice for lunch. Both times the service, food, and atmosphere has been great. The place is always busy, but the wait staff is always helpful and polite. Lunch is typical Italian food, you can select your courses from whatever they have prepared that day. If the lasanga bolognese is available, I highly recommend it.Having said that, no dish we tried was bad.

If you want meet and you are looking for a hidden champion restaurant - this is the place. Dont expect to much stylish ambient or choice of food (Florentina steak and little at the side - that's it). Also the place is simple Osteria style but its definitely worth going and I will do again for sure.
