We opted for the speedboat tour to Magdalena Island rather than the slower ferry in part because of the speed (45 minutes each way rather than 1.5 hours) but mostly because the speedboat also went to nearby Marta Island to see sea lions. It was an excellent decision. The sea lions and cormorants on this island were definitely worth the added cost. While you are unable to actually go ashore here, you can get some great views from the boat. We were lucky to have great weather for this trip, as it doesn't always go.
