This is a nice hotel, but felt it was a little overpriced compared to other hotels but guessing you pay for the garden and the history of the hotel, plus the location which is very close to the cathedral.

A fabulous night stop over on longer trip.

Reviewed By Stephen G

We need a one night stop over on a longer trip and choose Winchester to be the breakpoint in our journey. The Holiday Inn provided two things we required good carparking and Vegan option on the menu. The whole experience for a one night stop over was above our expectations. The rooms were spacious and clean and all the staff met you with a smile. But for me the head chef went beyond what is normal in this type of hotel in wanting to provide Vegan food for one couple in our party. Would happily stop again

No hot water.

Arrived to find that the hotel pool and spa is under renovation which I was aware of but website said pool opening late spring, I understood june to be summer??? Hey ho that's just my opinion. Booked a trip to have a couple of days away for my birthday, first night there seem to be a slight problem with the water pressure, thought nothing of it, woke up on second day tried the shower, no water at all, hot or cold, made the mistake of flushing the toilet and this did not refill with water either. Called reception and asked if there was a problem and when was it likely to be fixed, response was yes there was a problem and dont know, went to reception to ask when the water was going to he back on, again told don't know.... Found the staff to be of poor attitude and unhelpful, travelled back home annoyed and angry that I couldn't at least have a hot shower in my own room that I paid for. Cue the response from the hotel thanking me for my comments. I also noted that someone else had issues with no water back in February?, is this an ongoing problem the hotel is choosing not to deal with?

Disappointing family break.

Reviewed By easonpd

What was once a probably top class hotel looks very run down and in need of investment. The service in the restaurant was incredibly slow, and two orders had to be returned because they were wrong. Requests for help getting the TV working went unanswered. The swimming pool water was very cloudy. The room was very cold. Ok it was May, but the outside temperature was just 13 over the previous few days. Heating shouldn’t be on or off because of the date! There was a wedding (on a Monday night) which kept the children awake until midnight. Something like that should be pre-warned for non-wedding guests. Overall very disappointing and definitely way too expensive for the service and quality offered.

Afternoon Tea

We had reason to visit with my family for Afternoon Tea-we we’re a party of 7. We had a lovely table outside.but unfortunately our booking for Afternoon Tea had gone astray and the sandwiches and scones had not been prepared. Tomasz the manager was superb in quickly organising some olives and bread and drinks to keep up going whilst the chef rapidly prepared the sandwiches and scones fresh for us. We had a very enjoyable experience and cannot fault Tomasz and his staff as they were attentive and helped to make a very professional recovery. We had a memorable celebration and would definitely recommend.

Wonderful reception staff

Myself and my husband have been staying here quite regularly over the last year. Most recently this week when unfortunately we came to say goodbye to a family member. We had 2 rooms booked for ourselves and other family members. Unfortunately the other family members needed to cancel due to things moving along quicker than anticipated. I spoke to Naz on reception and explained what had happened. He was very kind and extremely helpful , he moved our second room to a date when we shall need to revisit for the funeral. He made sure we were ok and if there was anything else we needed. We have spoken with him on previous visits and have always found him to be professional, courteous, friendly, attentive and helpful. He has been an absolute diamond this week and deserves to be recognised. Thank you so much Naz.

Stayed overnight at The King Alfred as part of a package holiday booked through Celtic Trails. The location is good, within easy walking distance of the centre of Winchester. Our room was comfortable and even though we arrived early the friendly host allowed us into the room. We ate in the pub restaurant that evening and the food and service was excellent. A continental breakfast was provided in our room which was adequate, but I would have preferred to eat in the restaurant. I would recommend this hotel to family and friends and would stay there again.

I can't praise it highly enough for its quirkiness, its comfortable accommodation and its cleanliness. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the breakfast in the morning was first class. What a fantastic place to stay and a very short walk from the city centre and we would definitely stay there again.
