Man Eaters Camp

Great place to break your journey to the Coast

Reviewed By Ambassador547126

We had stayed at Man Eaters camp back in 2011 and we wanted to return their with our children. What a wonderful surprise...they have upgraded their pool, their rooms, the property is really well kept and the wonderful terrace overlooking the Tsavo River is just breathtaking. Festus and his team are incredible. They did everything possible to make our halt special. The welcome drink, serving us dinner riverside, very hearty and well prepared food including some special meals for our son who has food allergies...they did it all. Our waitress Rosemary was exceptional with serving food promptly, Patrick the chef was made the best eggrolls ever not to mention our other meals and dessert and Nicodemus the security guard always took care of us, making sure we were always escorted to our tents. The tents are very spacious, clean and with a wonderful balcony looking onto the Tsavo river. The beds and pillows are very comfortable and make for a great night or two of rest and relaxation. The camp is only about 7km to the Manyani Gate entrance of Tsavo East and from there about 2-3 hours to the Sala Gate between Malindi and Watamu. The price point for the camp is also very affordable. I highly recommend a night or two here as you make your way to or back from the Coast. There is also a little museum on sight with articles and photos and history about the man eating lions of Tsavo East.

This allows humans and animals to coexist in harmony. The Camp has been carefully constructed to minimize the impact on the fragile Tsavo West ecosystem; we utilize solar technology whenever possible, have implemented strict waste management system and have a biological waste water treatment plant. Waste water from tents and the kitchen is collected and filtered through lava stones, gravel and sand. It is important for us to educate our guests and staff to safeguard the environment and nature. We ensure all driver guides and guests abide the park rules of Kenya Wildlife Service and keep to the stipulated roads. For the interested we take you back stage and show you how we take every precaution to protect the fragile Tsavo environment. The guided walk will take you to our solar panel system, waste management system and explain you of biological waste water treatment plant works. Children are the future of Kenya. The Severin Safari Camp works very closely with the orphanage Mij Wa Salama in Mombasa, to improve the lives of the children. The camp has been granted the 'TUI Environmental Champion Award", "International Spa Standard" and won the "Travelife Gold Award".

Above and Beyond

Reviewed By guy1996

On our journey to the Chyulus out of Tsavo, part of the road collapsed causing our Landover to fall down a valley onto its roof. Luckily all the passengers were only minorly injured and I dislocated my shoulder. Nick Haller arranged two teams to collect us and take us back to Severin Camp. Severin Camp put us up for the night and I stayed there the next 3 nights trying to retrieve the car. It’s in moments of crisis like this when the people who really care go above an beyond to help. I reached out to the Tsavo trust, KWS, Wardens Engineers, Finch Hattons Camp and others. However they didn’t even return my calls after my plea for help. KWS wanted to charge me 150 k for their tractor loader. And the Senior warden Oyugi even made me pay for the park entry of my recovery teams and vehicles. However Severin camp were excellent in offering help. They allowed me the use of their vehicles to go the the crash site daily (over an hour away) and return in the evening. Philip, the camp technician, drove me there each day. On the day we finally got the car out by lifting it with a bucket loader from Mtito, Phillip helped with the whole recovery process. When the digger was pulling the recovered car back to Mtito Andei it was about to run out of fuel. Philip rushed me to Mtito late that evening to return with enough diesel to refuel the digger and let the car be towed the rest of the way. Daniels, the head at reception, was very helpful in organising this and gave us lifts from the main camp to our Banda seeing as we did not have a vehicle of our own now. All the other staff were equally as helpful when they were on duty. Severin even gave us a 10% discount due to the circumstances. During our extended stay I found it hard to fault the camp. The food was delicious, all the facilities were excellent and the camp was beautifully maintained. Thank you for all the extra help you gave us.

An old classic, not to be missed

Reviewed By Dianelorrainb

Kilaguni has an air of history about it. It is the second oldest lodge in Tsavo and it retains its 1960s feel but it has been modernized. Don't look for present-day glitz and glamor. Instead, you will enjoy the treat of a well-established place with mature gardens, and the more traditional safari lodge decor. The rooms all face the same way, overlooking the plains and hills, and the waterhole that is right in front of the long veranda and dining room. The veranda is a special feature of the lodge, you can sit and watch the wildlife come to the waterhole day and night. The service is excellent; the staff are friendly. The pool is old but still ok to enjoy. There is a really well-stocked gift shop and a nice bar, and an alcove with historical photos showing the early days of the lodge. The rooms have large bathrooms (no tub, just a shower), balconies, and comfortable spacious sleeping area. The room was very hot when we stayed there, and opening the door to help the ceiling fan was not an option, given monkeys and other wildlife at close hand. This is a peaceful place, well situated to be a base for exploring Tsavo West, or to stay here en route to Amboseli or Tsavo East.

Amazing!!

We stayed here for two days while exploring Tsavo East and West. It was absolutely incredible! After our long drive from Nairobi, we were met with cool towels soaked in eucalyptus oil to clean our hands and faces. My husband and I were the only ones at the camp for both days, so we essentially had a personal staff that saw to our every need. We had the big suite camp with an amazing view of Tsavo West, a king size bed, and a shower and open air bathroom. Daniel the chef attended to our every need, preparing a personalized menu for us when we were ready to eat. Mustafa was also amazing, making sure we always had a full glass of wine and were comfortable. After safaris in Tsavo East and West (where we came up close to elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and a whole host of other animals), Mustafa would arrange the bean bag chairs for us on the cliff overlooking Tsavo West, pour us a sundowner glass of wine, and bring us a snack to enjoy while we watched the sunset. On our second night there, they placed our dinner table on the patio overlooking a watering hole so that we could watch the elephants drink while eating. This place is amazing. I can’t even begin to describe how welcomed and at home we felt here. Totally worth visiting.

The room was basic but the bed was outstanding- very spacious and comfortable. There are lots of nice seating areas and the swimming pool is well kept and clean. The staff are accommodating and happy to organise boat trips on the lake and game drives etc. It is worth noting that on the game drive they organised for us through the wild and rugged Tsavo we did encounter some problems with the vehicle. The staff were welcoming, politie and always on their toes. Food was excellent and even soft drinks were included in their package.
