Decent Room, reasonably priced...

Reviewed By idiotsabroad

The TA reviews I read are correct. Rio Gallegos is pretty much just a place to spend the night for tourists. The hotel is clearly making efforts to update, so the hallways and lobby are nicely decorated. Room was just this side of shabby... poor security with large window on the street side and no secure option to get fresh air. As a previous reviewer mentioned, breakfast was lousy and the hotel worker was surly. But the price was right and we had clean sheets and a decent night's sleep. Nothing to brag about, nothing to complain about. Best thing about staying here was a very short walk to Heladeria Tito... good ice cream stop. considerably nicer than the neighborhood.

A nice small town's stay :)

Reviewed By Myo M

It was a "nice & comfortable" stay at this small hotel in my own room with my own bathroom & TV at really a pretty good price of about 25 US$ a night. There's a nice dining area too (right beside the lobby area) with plenty of tables & chairs where it's nice to bring in your own food and have lunch or dinner later in the day (apart from having breakfast in the morning), and yes conveniently located at just a walk of less than 5 minutes from this place (to the right after coming out & across the street) is a "nice-sized" supermarket with great varieties of food & miscellaneous items, and also near that supermarket (but on the same side of the street as this hotel) is a bakery where you can also get sandwiches & such besides its variety of cakes (of which I had a "quite tasty" chocolate cake!). And I also liked the location here which is a quiet one but also not too far from the town center at about a 15-minute walk away (where you can also find a number of restaurants for a proper meal). Being in Rio Gallegos specifically for the purpose of visiting Cabo Virgenes (the Lighthouse 'Faro Cabo Virgenes' & the Penguin Colony) about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the town, I got my mission accomplished by taking a taxi at a cost of 5,000 argentina pesos (the equivalent of 130 or so US$) which was actually a "good bargain" from what the tour operators in town charge for the same tour. And also in the town itself (and all within a 15-to-20-minute walk from this place) are a few places for about a day of sightseeing at a "leisure pace" (since each site won't take too long): Museo de los Pioneros (a museum like a "quaint lovely" house with charming yards front & back and where inside the displays are nicely set to learn the life as it was in this town about a century ago), the riverfront promenade (with a fairly-wide beach & the Rio Gallegos River alongside and where there are also some abandoned ships to see along the promenade itself), Plaza San Martin (with an equestrian statue of the libertador General San Martin), Museo de Guerra Malvinas Argentinas (a small museum about the Falklands War with some nice miniature model warships on display) along with the roadside monument for that war not too far from the museum (not a soldier statue or such but like a curve-shaped sculpture with a wreath on the top).

Avellaneda Suites Hotel

Very nice staff. Clean hotel. Location not great.

Reviewed By Christine W

I wouldn't recommend a ray over in Rio Gallegos. We stayed there to break our journey down to Ushuaia. There's not much there of interest for a tourist & little choice of restaurants. The hotel is about a mile away from the Main Street in town & about 30 mins walk from the bus terminal, do not ideal location. I imagined it would be a modern apart hotel from the name, but it's more like a little guest house in a residential part of town. What we did like were the family who run it by hey let us check in in the morning, offered us breakfast when we arrived & were thoroughly charming. For that reason we give a rating of 4.

Good hotel but would not return

Reviewed By sod831

This was one of the better hotels we've seen for a while - it's clean, well-located, and has professional service. Unfortunately however there seems to be a total lack of commitment to basic environmental principles - towels are changed daily even when they're hung up, all of the cutlery is individually wrapped in non-recyclable single-use plastic etc. Also of note, the price structure is very opaque. We booked for 2 nights, and were given the price per night. When we went to check out we were also charged a day room rate for the day in between the 2 nights, effectively doubling what we had been quoted. This was disappointing because we probably would have been happy to pay the higher price, but the way it was done felt very misleading. Overall, we did enjoy our stay and it's a great hotel apart from the issues mentioned above, which are easily resolvable, so I hope this leads to future improvements.

More of a motel then hotel

Reviewed By Markyj85

We stayed two nights in March 2017 (couple with a three year old baby). We had off street parking, a room at the back of the complex that wasn't noisy with cable tv and adaquate wifi. The breakfast in the mornings was good, typical Argentinian hostel type with some ceral/bread/croissants, coffee and juice. As much as you wanted to eat. It wasn't a full buffet but it was enough variety to get you through to lunch time easily enough. The fixtures in the Hotel are a bit dated but you are staying in basic Accomodation in a town that isn't a tourist destination. Two nights was just enough for us.

Rooms are clean and nice. The ones at the upper floor are better but the rooms downstairs are cheaper. The two ladies at the reception were very helpful (about where could we park our car while we go to Ushuaïa - the Casino - and where to book bus tickets). We enjoyed our stay here (one night before Ushuaïa and one night when we came back). Wifi can be great or bad, depends on the room. Breakfast ok, toasts, butter and jam. In front of a supermarket (Anonima) and two blocks away from the Casino where you can park your car if you leave the town. The hotel has a parking.

Very noisy

Reviewed By Highland81

Stayed 2 nights and found the room to be very noisy from neighbouring rooms, corridor and traffic outside the window. The bed was very wobbly so pushed it hard against the wall which made it more comfortable but by doing so it exposed nail clippings from a previous guest on the floor. Staff and restaurant/bar were ok though.
