Top 10 hotels in Merano, Italy

August 7, 2022 Natalie Tallman

Just a few miles south of the Austrian border, Merano (also called Meran) is an old spa town. About half the residents here speak German, the other half Italian. Take a dip in one of the thermal baths, or try Merano’s famous “grape cure” by imbibing - what else? - lots of grapes. The South Tyrol Museum of Tourism is located in Trauttmansdorff Castle, the former holiday pad of Austria’s Empress Elisabeth. Merano 2000, a ski resort that’s actually in the village of Hafling, is linked by cable car.

So, don’t know where to start. We had high expectations for this hotel. Unfortunately, didn’t’ go as hoped. Really, REALLY rude people at the reception. At the arrival we were just parked at the garden to wait for the room. We didn’t check in early. Later my wife went to the reception to ask for fitness offers they have. She was told to go to the hotel website and book from there. Not much help as the person at the reception barely got up to “help”… As we were checking out, I asked if I could borrow the luggage wagon to bring our luggage down from the room. “Lady” at the reception had one word answer, NO, in a were rude and unfriendly voice and tone. Later found out that these wagons are not to be used without “a driver” from the hotel. Please note that this was a normal wagon that you see in lots of hotels. No hi tech… This hotel could have so much potential if the management would treat the customers as, well, customers.

Surprisingly Great Stay ????

Reviewed By German K

As much as I hated going to the Terme Merano, I truly enjoyed staying at Hotel Terme Merano. Rooms are amazing and the hotel itself is really upbeat and stylish, especially the lounge area. Their spa inside the hotel is quite unique with infinity pool, Jacuzzis and a great variety of saunas (my favourite one was the herbal sauna). In the sauna people were nude, however, nobody forced me to remove my swimwear etc. The only request I had from personnel is to remove my phone due to concerns of privacy of their guests, which was my mistake, I checked my bank account in the sauna area and is a totally reasonable request. Overall, I recommend the hotel and advise to avoid the Terme Merano, which is connected to the hotel with a passage. Keep the service up and going ??

Relais & Chateaux Hotel Castel Fragsburg

High above the valley of Merano – nestling against the sundrenched southern slopes of the mighty Dolomites and commanding spectacular sweeping views over one of Europe’s most enchanting landscapes: this is Castel Fragsburg, a fine 17th century Retreat of noble origins, now the smallest luxury hotel in the region. Castel Fragsburg is privately owned since 1955 by the Ortner family, who continue to give the hotel remarkable character reflecting the unspoilt, vast landscape of the Dolomites and the vineyards and orchards of South Tyrol. As a member of Relais & Châteaux the Castle Fragsburg follows the philosophy ‘a unique home for a unique stay’ and is part of their ‘collection of the world’s finest restaurants and hotels’.

Perfectly ruined the first day of our holiday

Reviewed By ba296

I wanted so much to love this hotel. The charming and helpful staff, the central location, the clever design, the bicycles available to guests for free, wristbands for the therme and saunas. But when you charge €175 per night - the most I’ve ever paid for a bed - everything has to be perfect. So when the obstinate and intransigent management wasted half of my day - and that of another guest who kindly offered to translate - by trying to weasel out of a direct booking offer to provide breakfast, it was an act of mean-spiritedness that undermined any possibility of generosity. Indeed they did not relent until the guest, a stranger, took pity and tried to pay for us! Finally shamed into taking the correct action, the hotel management did not apologise for the stress and hunger which had ruined the first day of the holiday, nor the wasted time for two guests, nor do anything to make up for the missing meal (not to mention the promised spa vouchers which never appeared). The excellent coffee aside, the breakfast we had was nothing special and had to be taken inside the dark bar, the outdoor terrace being closed for some unfathomable reason on Wednesdays. Why not empower their staff to make a little goodwill gesture? It would have cost nothing and left everyone happy and unbruised. Instead we experienced the Tyrolean coldness at the heart of this establishment. Thank God that big-hearted, chaotic Rome was our next destination.

Old feel

Reviewed By daad22

We were allotted a standard classic double room for 4 nights. Whether a standard double room or suite, for the fact that the hotel is 4 stars , one would expect better. The furniture was old and extremely basic which could be found in any 3-star establishment. The hotel smelt musty and old immediately upon entering. It was 36C and no AC. I should have asked prior to reserving, so I learned a lesson for the future. The breakfast was very simple and basic without variation. Twice we asked for omelet and twice we were told its either sunny side up or scrambled. It was extremely noisy as we had to keep all the windows open all the time due to the extreme heat. The hotel is on a main road and the traffic is very heavy.

A Great Escape!

Reviewed By carolet333

We have just returned from our ninth visit to Meran and our fourth to this glorious luxury hotel (previous visits in 2012 to 2014). This was a late booking, for 16 nights, following the Covid-related cancellations of all our previous attempts to reach the Alps this year, including our planned holiday in June at the beautiful Hotel Adria, sister to the Park Mignon. On arrival at the Park Mignon we were greeted with great warmth by the family owners and the many staff members whom we recognised from either the Mignon or the Adria. It turned out that we were the hotel’s first English guests this year, and indeed the first Inghams guests to visit any hotel in Meran. This we found bizarre, because the Meran area was relatively unscathed during Northern Italy’s spring Covid crisis, and it has clearly taken huge precautions - in the hotels, on public transport, in shops - to protect its citizens and visitors. Compliance with local instructions on wearing masks, sanitising hands and maintaining social distancing seemed to us exemplary, and we quickly felt relaxed and safe, inside the hotel and out. Everything about the Park Mignon hotel is first class. Because we spent most of our days hiking in the mountains, we did not visit the extensive spa, but the indoor/outdoor pool was lovely at the end of the day. The food is sensational, with choice at every stage of the six-course dinners, plus additional amuse-bouches from the chef at the gala dinners on Sundays. On our first Thursday we enjoyed a traditional Tyrolean evening, with Heinz Gamper on the zither accompanying a terrific, albeit filling, dinner. On the second Thursday the star turn was the patisserie chef - we were served a stunning range of (mostly chocolate) desserts. The wine list is also excellent, with many high-end local wines to choose from, as well as international options. The prices of the wine are very fair, with affordable as well as eye-wateringly expensive bottles available. At the start of the day, the (masked-up, socially distanced) breakfast buffet also set us up beautifully for our hiking. Our room was smart and the twin beds very comfortable. The weather in Meran was not as hot as we had expected in August, certainly not too hot for hiking, and we experienced a couple of days of rain with dramatic evening thunderstorms. But given the right hiking gear, this didn’t matter at all; indeed the contrasts were refreshing. We have our tenth holiday to Meran booked for next June. We will be staying at the lovely Adria again (which I have reviewed in previous years); for us as a retired couple, it is a more affordable long-term option. But for 2020 the luxury of the Park Mignon has been a welcome restorative after the bleakness of lockdown in the UK, and we are most grateful to the hotel family and staff for treating us so well.
