Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Swaziland's pioneer conservation area and a beautiful, secluded sanctuary situated in the Kingdom's Ezulwini Valley, 'Valley of Heavens'. Located between Mbabane and Manzini, 24hr gate access is offered to the Sanctuary enabling guests to enjoy the neighbouring tourist hubs of Ezulwini and Malkerns with their many unique attractions and craft shops. The name 'Mlilwane' ('Little Fire' in siSwati) was derived from the numerous fires started by lightening strikes on the Mlilwane Hill but now holds significance as the little fire that started a big conservation movement in Swaziland resulting in the saving of over 22 species from local extinction across the three reserves. The Sanctuary covers 4,560 hectares and comprises of a southern and northern section. The southern section's grassland plains stretch up to the striking Nyonyane Mountain with its exposed granite peak known as the 'Rock of Execution'. All of Mlilwane's accommodation, dining and activity options are concentrated in this southern section of the park, with the exception of guided trails which enter the pristine northern section.

Aloe House at Mlilwane

Reviewed By Mnorid

Aloe house at Milwane sleeps up to 14, possibly a bit more. Great for a big group. All bedrooms are ensuite with a private patio, there is a fire place, big fully equipped kitchen and outdoor grill. No TV, so bring lots of board games and boom box/music speaker. The caretaker is very friendly and helpful. We forgot to bring the salt and she brought us some. Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there so we did not get to do ant excursions.

Enjoyable

Professional and friendly checking in - great setting - rooms very clean and well appointed. I can recommend and will return. Negative - loud and unruly guests partying until early hours of the morning - as there is no one on duty after hours, there is no one to control guests.

Wide Horizons

Take the road less travelled and hidden in the majestic Makungutsha mountains you will discover 'Wide Horizons'. This is a get away from it all - on a working farm, with wildlife conservation area, well stocked dams for fishing, surrounded by glorious indigenous forests full of birdsong, with meandering trails following cascading streams to soothe your soul and get back to nature. At the centre of 'Wide Horizons' is the original stone and thatch built farmhouse, set in spacious well kept gardens with hidden statues and sculptures, contemplation chapel and natural rock pool. Nearby, the renowned 'Rosecraft' weaving centre once provided employment for many locals from the surrounding area and exported exquisite designer fabrics, tableware, carpets etc. worldwide. 'Wide Horizons' has quirkily decorated double rooms in the main lodge, self catering cottages, and safari style tents for the real out of Africa experience.

VACATION REVIEW

Enjoyed the privacy and peace. house was well cleaned. i would recommend that the private lodges have their own swimming pool, try to maintain the hiking trails, have a freezer as the fridge is small, have doom/insect killer to help with the mosquitoes.

Disappointed

Reviewed By Petra N

The hostess is indeed very friendly, which is very much appreciated, but she was not around when we arrived. Instead, there was someone who gave us the keys to the four units that were allocated to us. I say allocated, because they were not the units we had booked, and were totally inappropriate for our combination of people. Unfortunately nothing could be done about this at that point of day. When talking to the hostess the following day, she explained that one of her guests had requested to stay longer, which she honoured by giving them one of the units we had requested. If it were not for the combination of people we had, it would not have been a big problem, but really, this is not the way to go about things. I would encourage the hostess to have a more professional approach, and also to upgrade the rooms a bit. We enjoyed the breakfast, though were served eight portions for seven people; it didn't give us the impression that our booking had been treated seriously.

Stayed here over the Swazi Rally weekend. A newly built/refurbed and done beautifully so. This place is let down by the restaurant . Nearly 80% of the items on the menu are not readily available . Every time I ordered something there was a certain ingredient that the kitchen did not have. No fault of the Chef or staff I am sure. Its a real pity , this place has so much potential! Overall, a nice quiet place to stay over and break from maybe your onward journey.

A hostel rather than a guesthouse

Reviewed By N R

Clean and run by nice people, but superbly basic. Hard to justify the price given a random collection of rooms with shared bathrooms. It did have WiFi that worked quite well. But do not think of it as anything more than a basic hostel where you can cook your own meals in a semi-functional kitchen. For $70, I can get a much better room in just about any city in the world, including NYC and London.
