Nicest Place Around in a Not Nice Area

Reviewed By Love2Travel06117

This resort is nice enough. The rooms are clean and have nice bathrooms and comfortable beds. The unit we were in was spacious. It has good TV options. The pool and beach areas are nice although the water at the beach was not very clean. They maintain the property well. Those are the pros. The cons are that there were very few people staying there, perhaps because it was low season (March). The food at the restaurant was just okay and the staff seemed a little indifferent. We had to ask several times for towels for the pool and had to wait a good while to get them. The store didn't seem to be open a lot. They only allow you to kayak with a "guide" and there were group activities offered only on weekends. The resort is isolated and that might be a good thing because the town of Puerto Barrios is not very appealing and we heard it is not safe, though we had no bad experiences. We entertained ourselves by taking the boat to Livingston and Rio Dulce and ate in restaurants in town at night. They were nice enough, but we were almost the only people in them. Not a festive atmosphere. If you want a very quiet vacation sitting by the pool or beach, this could be the place for you. It did have nice pool features for children but they did not interest us. We left a few days early and went to Antigua which was much more interesting and fun. Do not under any circumstances, decide to drive from Guatemala City to this resort. It was a harrowing experience which we felt very fortunate to survive. If you are going to drive in the Puerto Barrios area, be careful of people who step into the road, refuse to get out of it, and scooters going every which way with little kids and babies hanging off them. Other than the main thoroughfares, roads are just about non existent. Mostly nice people though.

Livingston

I still don't know what to make of Livingston but if you are staying here Posada El Delfin is not a bad choice. Giovanni the manager is very helpful and knowledgeable and all the staff are very friendly. The hotel was clean, the rooms a decent size, the shower did the job and breakfast was a bonus. The swimming pool is good to cool down in and the hammocks on the boat dock are a great place to relax and watch the Pelicans, Frigate birds and the odd Osprey. The rooms can get pretty hot but the rooms have air-con. I would be a bit dubious about staying in the rooms near the table football!
