Hotel Posada del Hidalgo

Posada del Hidalgo is a beautiful colonial mansion. This attractive structure was built in 1890 by Don Rafael Almada, a wealthy and influential "alcalde" (mayor) who spent five years and 100,000 gold pesos on its construction. The wooden trim was made from 285 Canadian red pine beams. Don Rafael's mansion was the largest and most beautiful in El Fuerte. It was built just below the old fort, and has four layers of brick and adobe construction. The iron work was brought from Mazatlan.

Lovely hotel

Lovely colonial hotel with gardens, pool and a rooftop bar. Rooms a good size, comfy beds and pillows. No opening window. Cockerels start crowing at 5am onwards so no need to set an alarm! Charged bottled water in the room $39 pesos. Enjoyed the free Zorro show even though we didn’t speak Spanish. Lovely courtyards. A short walk to the beautiful square.

Beautiful but showing its age

Pros: Rooms big and comfortable Courtyard is gorgeous (attached) Pool area nice and relaxing (dubious cleanliness but it was 36 degrees c) Staff generally helpful (if you can locate them) - the new owner of the restaurant, Diego (I think), was very kind and informative Location is right next to the main square and less than a minute from the museum and malecon etc The much more expensive hotel located 30s away organised tours and does the Zorro show so you can just go there to sort out activities. They also allow use of their bigger pool as long as you buy something Aircon works and is essential Cons: The first room we were given had a ceiling that leaked water onto the socket my charger was plugged into as well as the bathroom leaking (this was during a rainstorm in the afternoon while we were napping) Rooms inconsistent as everything is so old so in our first room the fan didn’t work but in our second the lamp was missing - we much preferred room 2 to the initial one we had Generally very dark inside and windows covered and unreachable so there is no natural light in rooms Breakfast is absolutely awful, my girlfriend loves chilequiles and described them as the worst she has had in 2 years of living in Mexico. The eggs and coffee both cold and flavourless Hotel does not provide transport to and from El Fuerte town so you have to factor in 300$ for both legs to the station which is a complete rip off as it is a 10min drive each way

Must stay if your Chepe train ride ends in El Fuerte

Reviewed By bigboy61455

I stayed there because the hotel owner opened it to our Gate 1 guided tour during pandemic- now it seems open for booking via expedia as well. - Room: will mention later under tips. - Courtyard, garden decorations: top notch and probably the main reason to stay. Make sure that you take enough night photos while lights and decorations are on. Then during daytime enjoy "hacienda" upscale Mexican home with included western bar area, all interesting cacti and tress, birds and more. Cool guest area to hang out with antique from different countries as well (same area where wifi is available). - Restaurant is interestingly decorated with big painting and breakfast buffet is also good. Tips: VERY IMPORTANT - make sure to mention during booking whether you want to stay in a "classic (Victoria B&B) like room" or a "rustic" room. It was a shock to me as it was assigned to "rustic" room - where previous negative reviews are. Felt like you are in "maid quarter" or dungeon like a prisoner due to very unusual design including difficult to open doors with slanted metal door ledge. After a long train ride, I was in short fuse and did not take long to disappoint when I can not open bathroom easily or can not get hot water right away due to weird equipment. Later beauty of the courtyard sinks in and able to enjoy. It is an acquired taste but later found out that it was a newer guest house section (2 story cute house with beautiful trees around it) and each room has a separate heating or AC unit. I am even more impressed here with beautiful decoration than next hotel in Alamos where we all expect to see beautiful courtyard.

A classic Mexican Hotel

Reviewed By Dave M

Hotel Santa Elena, in the heart of El Fuerte, is one of those classic iconic Mexican places to stay. It’s actually an old house of the area, renovated into a series of rooms around an interior courtyard. Think high ceilings in the rooms, a single window to the street in a 1-2 foot thick brick or adobe wall. Add in a bathroom with plenty of hot water, great air conditioning and even a closet where you can hang your clothes, and you’ve got a perfect place to rest up before or after a trip on El Chepe. But the hotel comes with a couple of caveats. The rooms up front nearest the town square can be noisy, so ask for a room in the back. There are also no elevators if you get an upstairs room. And, if you are paying with a credit card, as opposed to pesos, you’ll pay a steep uncharge for that privilege. There are lots of food options nearby and even a restaurant connected to the hotel, so you’re covered there. The mercado is only a couple of blocks away, and in El Fuerte, that means some great birria and great tacos are always nearby. Would I stay here again? Of course, because it’s safe, centrally located and a great value.

Short and curly hairs in my bed!

Reviewed By mike M

This was a bad, bad experience. We are not picky people, generally, and even less when we've paid in advance. But I'd rather pay twice for a night stay in a town than share my bed with the hairs of another person. It was foul. Stains on the sheets and no fitted sheet to keep your body off the old, stained mattress and it was a no brainer. Time to find a new hotel.
