Great little hotel right on beach. Very clean and well kept. Owners live onsite. Betty and Owen were so friendly. Only weird thing is all room doors are glass. Know before you stay there aren’t tvs in the rooms, which adds to the peace of the place. We will stay here our next time in area.

We had the pleasure of staying 5 days here. Cute cottage with all that you need. Kitchen, bathroom, tv , wifi, fresh water to drink. The owners Joe & Laura are so nice and will help you with everything. They have kayaks you can use, a gorgeous pool, and also the option to go fishing, for a fee. The bay front property has the most beautiful views. Loved everything about the place and will definitely be back. Thank you Joe & Laura

STAY AWAY

Reviewed By juuulio

Be careful when booking at this hotel. I booked three nights back in September (3 months ago) and unfortunately I couldn’t get to Corozal due to COVID restrictions at the border. Tried cancelling however the hotel manager was totally unempathetic and has kept on trying to charge my credit card for the past three months, they have attempted charging my card over 20 times for different amounts, which is pretty much fraud. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE AND THINK TWICE BEFORE BOOKING WITH THEM. A message to the owner, sad to see how obsessed you got with my cancellation. Sad how much you need the $130 to have kept trying personally to charge my card.

Fernando's Seaside Guesthouse

Treated Like Family

Reviewed By xxlazyhazelxx

We were greeted by Fernando at the main pier after arriving to Sarteneja by the Thunderbolt water taxi from San Pedro. Fernando drove us to the guesthouse, just two blocks away. I was immediately struck by the view of the bay and the intense blue green water. Our room was #3 and had the same gorgeous view. Our room was very clean, had two beds, a TV, shelves for clothes, place to hang clothes and a spacious bathroom with large shower. Air conditioning was more than adequate. We actually turned it down. When Fernando's family found out I liked watermelon juice, they brought up an ice cold pitcher of it, which tasted like heaven in the intense heat. Fernando's grandmother let me heat up my leftover food in the microwave oven downstairs. I would highly recommend Fernando's to anyone. Since we bought property here, we will be back!

Great or Poor, depending on what you like

The good: Great location, just a few yards away from the pier where Thunderbolt docks. Beautiful view of the bay, great breeze to enjoy. We requested bay view. We opened our windows and enjoyed the breeze for the first few days. No A/C needed at all. The terrace has great hammocks to relax in, and of course, an amazing view and great breeze. Very close to town square, only a short walk away from bus terminal. We enjoyed the recreation areas all along the bay, along with a great place for walking/jogging in the mornings. I like how their prices stay the same, one flat rate that includes tax and all. The hotel itself was clean and decent, though not fancy. Great WiFi. The bad: The beds were not very comfortable. If you do get a budget room with no A/C, keep in mind that you may not always get a breeze through your window and it will get warm, not to mention the mosquitoes. The last night we were there, breeze suddenly stopped and mosquitoes took over. Also, on weekends, you have cars parked on the street with very loud music. This was solved by shutting the window, but then it got hot. There is no elevator, so keep this in mind if stairs are a problem. The ugly: Very early during our last morning there, the electricity went out in the hotel and surrounding area. We were still able to shower with some of the water that was left in the pipes, but eventually it ran out so we were left with no water. Luckily, there credit card machine was still running so I was able to check out, pay, and leave. Also, when the windows are shut, there is a bad sewer smell that fills the room. I asked the guy if the electricity issue was common and he said they knew that it was going to happen. I would have appreciated it I had known so that maybe I could have showered the night before and paid for my stay ahead of time. I did not have enough cash to pay, only my credit card. In short, if you need an affordable place to stay for one or two nights, it is fine. But do not make this your main hotel. We stayed 4 days/ 3 nights.

Casa Royale

Comfortable "apartment style" accommodations

Reviewed By Cindy S

Our one bedroom suite was comfortably furnished with a well-stocked kitchen and large bathroom. The only down-side was that the air conditioner is on the far wall of the living room and not big enough to cool the bedroom at the other end of the apartment. The first night it was so warm that my husband slept on the couch where it was cooler. There is a lovely screened porch, but the caretaker, "Ray" forgot to tell us that the door automatically locks behind you, so we found ourselves locked out at 6:00 am. Other than that mishap, Ray was very accommodating. Owner "Rita" was easy to contact via email and phone and was very helpful as we were planning our trip.

Peaceful oasis just out of the village

Reviewed By Rita L

My husband and I recently spent 4 days at Backpackers Paradise and absolutely loved it. The owner, Nathalie, is a superb host: always and I mean always available, very attentive and caring and a lot of fun to be with. Her property is amazing: you have a taste of jungle just outside the village of Sarteneja, which is just few minutes away. You have beautiful horses, dogs, spectacular mango trees and other fruit trees, birds, iguanas...it's such a beautiful and peaceful place. All amenities are available as well: we stayed in cabana 6, which is very spacious and offers a kitchen space with all supplies, fridge, coffee maker, toaster, stove...and of course wifi. We will always chose Nathalie's Backpackers Paradise when we visit Sarteneja and cannot recommend it enough.

Not Really a Resort

Reviewed By islandgurl2

The first hiccup occurred when, following the provided, recommended driving instructions from Orchid Bay staff, we arrived at the first ferry to find it in dry dock for repairs. As this was the #1 route recommended by them, I would have thought they would inform us of an issue like this. We then tried to contact Orchid Bay via telephone, and were told when we arrived the number we had been calling had changed, yet we, again had not been advised. It was reassuring when I did receive a prompt response to the email I then sent to let them know we’d be late. The ferry issue translated to an extra 3 hours of driving, and navigating through the backroads of Belize in the dark. The provided instructions were easy to follow though, and there was really only one road, so we drove right to Orchid Bay. Check-in was smooth with Damaris and we just dropped our bags at the Casita then proceeded to the restaurant for dinner. The food here is good, the portions generous; the menu isn’t huge, but everything we tried was well prepared and tasty. The ambiance of the restaurant/office did take me a little aback, and was not what I expected. It reminded me of a little back-country pub, which I suppose is what it actually is in essence. The really disappointing thing about our stay was the condition of pretty much everything. At first glance it looks great, but when your really look, there’s an air of neglect and shabbiness throughout. I imagine it’s been a difficult couple of years through Covid, but a little elbow grease and attention to detail could go a long way! Our Casita appeared clean, and relatively well equipped, but I was shocked when we climbed into bed and saw a hole in the sheets. The grout on the floor of the shower is black, and the taps on the sink are eroding; there is residue on the tile floor in the living room and bedroom from area rugs that have been removed, but the real kicker was the grime on the dishes and utensils in the kitchen! We had to wash everything before we used it…. Housekeeping apparently “prepares” your unit for you before arrival, but if you want service during your stay you have to request it, and if you want extra/clean towels there’s an extra charge…. Wow! I thought this was a “resort”. They are using this term pretty loosely in my opinion. There were paddle boards and kayaks available for guest use, but only one paddle, and the second kayak wasn’t seaworthy anyway. During our stay, we also noticed several large local families visited the beach and facilities, left their garbage behind, made use of the limited resources while casita guests paid good money for the privilege. Everywhere we looked, the neglect was disappointingly obvious. The cushions on the lounge chairs by the pool were filthy, and one in particular appeared to be covered in black mold, the pool itself could use a good scrub too. There were uneven boards, and missing or broken lights on the pier, and the benches and wooden beach furniture could all use a quick refurbish. I fell kind of bad, like I’m “dissing” the place, but I really do feel that with a little effort Orchid Bay could go from disappointing to spectacular! The setting is beautiful, the beach is calm, ocean water is warm, and very shallow, but still pleasant to cool off in. We didn’t do any excursions, and weren’t actually given much information on what might be available, but we were happy to just relax and sip coconut rum on the beach. After the rather extreme journey to get here, we expected better, and do not recommend this “resort”.
