Nice, clean, economical, with friendly service

Reviewed By chartreuse_shrimp

I can't add much to the previous reviews - Hotel Casa Chacala is a very nice little hotel, clean, well-kept, and conveniently located a short walk (maybe 200-300 yards/meters) from the beach and the local amenities, with friendly helpful staff (with some who speak English, which is very helpful for those of us whose Espanol is basically non-existent). Most of the other guests during our stay were families out for the Easter and Santa Semana holidays weeks. There was a bit of noise from the pool area sometimes in the afternoon or evening - children playing, young adults being young adults, but nothing too raucous, and it died down early. And, of course the sounds from the town can't be avoided, but that too did not run too late even on the busy holiday weekend. After the holiday passed, it was pretty quiet all over. A simple but adequate common area and kitchen is downstairs next to the pool area. Room had a small refrigerator and microwave, and we used some of the flatware and dishes from the kitchen. You can get in-room coffee in the morning, but we elected the coffee maker option to brew our own, and got an electric kettle and french press, which we greatly appreciated. Fresh, hot coffee on the balcony in the morning: priceless! (Pick up some Cafe Arisan at the market in La Penita). Views are obscured a bit by some of the newer hotels in front - some of which may also be nice but, for the price, you can't beat Casa Chacala. COVID precautions were adequate, and easy to deal with since just about everything is open air except in the rooms. We were advised that making reservations directly with the hotel by phone or email - instead of through online booking services - will get you a better price.

Ah, muy !Tranquillo!, super clean, with fabulous, kind, helpful hosts.

Quinta Mar Y Selva is at the end of a quiet street about 8 or so blocks down to the main beach in Chacala. Across the road from the hotel is a wonderful breakfast place that bakes their own bread, the Mauna Kea Cafe (and also has great coffee, yummy smoothies). My friend and I were in need of a quiet, tranquil place to chill out and this lovely place more than fit the bill. The roof top terrace was great for viewing the night sky and sunsets and hearing the many kinds of birds in the area. You can also hear the surf as it pounds the rocks on the shore. The hosts carried up a large and heavy table with umbrella to make this space even more magical. The hotel has a small pool and after walking back up the hill (hot!)to the hotel, it is simply wonderful to rinse off the beach in the shower handily stationed right there, and take a cool, refreshing plunge into it. The hosts were very helpful and exceedingly kind; a relative took us back to PV for our flight back, a really early morning trek that started at 6 am. Please be the kind of USA travelers that like being off of the beaten track and are kind, thoughtful and aware.

Cancellation was a nightmare

Reviewed By MyClone

First, I believe that what people say about the place itself is true. It looks absolutely lovely. However, when plans change you are on your own. My advice is don't book, if you have the slightest chance of having to cancel. We found the place on VRBO when we were looking for a vacation for the extended family to finally come together again at what we hoped was the end of the Covid pandemic. I should have noticed something was wrong when the owner steered me off VRBO and communicated with me directly. But hey I thought, we were both saving a few bucks, nothing wrong with that. We are from Canada, and the owner's insistence on using Paypal actually added a few hundred dollars in conversion cost, but what can you do... We agreed that half the total would have to be paid upfront but that I could cancel with a full refund up until about three months before the booking. Well, Covid got worth, we have immunocompromised members of our family and we did have to cancel. I gave ample warning that this may actually happen and cancelled well before the deadline. The owner treated me with disrespect throughout the cancellation process. He told me that he would hold 10% back, period. Luckily I had kept all our email conversations. I let him know that I might seek legal counsel and reminded him of the email in which he had agreed to a full refund. Reluctantly he agreed. I want to make this short: It took weeks of back and forth. He fought me at every step. For example, he still charged me the 3% that Paypal retained as a fee for my original payment. He showed that he has no concept of how currency conversion worked and in the end the "full refund" cost me about 10% in conversion and coverage of his paypal fees, and weeks and weeks of unpleasantness, because for the life of it he couldn't be polite.

A pretty decent hotel

Reviewed By 1_4_adventure

My wife and I stayed at the Villa Del Mar in the newly renovated room for just shy of 10 nights. Jon the manager was an incredible host. He was attentive and accommodating with any of our needs. Any of the questions or concerns we had were immediately answered and looked after. The room was beautifully decorated and spotless with daily maid service. The bed was extremely comfortable (please note, if you don’t like thick pillows, you may want to bring your own - if at all possible). The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed to make our own breakfasts (which is all we made there). Any utensils that were missing (eg. bottle opener and cheese grater) the cleaning staff found for us. We particularly liked the juicer and we had freshly squeezed jugo de nanranja every morning. The room however, was A LOT smaller than the photos depicted and there was limited storage. However, once we got used to the space it work for us for our short stay. We don’t think that it would be as comfortable for a long-term stay (eg. over 2 weeks). To preface this next part of our review, I must say that we were quite spoiled during the majority of our stay, as we were the only ones staying at the hotel for 7 of the 9 nights. When other guests arrived, they were fairly noisy and being in that particular room, you heard them open the gate and if they were gathering around the pool later at night. As well, there were a number of lights that were extremely annoying and frustrating. The one streetlight was extremely bright and we had to hang towels on the curtain rod of the patio door to block the light (Jon assured us that light blocking curtains have been ordered, but unfortunately this was of no help to us at this particular time). I hope they were also ordered for the bedroom window, as well because when the other guests arrived in the evening, they would flick on and off the lights, which disturbed our sleep (it was as if they were turning on the bedroom light). All in all we did enjoy our stay at Villa Del Mar and in Chacala. A few more details regarding Chacala... Be sure to try all the street food stalls as well as the restaurants. We can’t really say anything negative about any of them. The ones on the beach were slightly more expensive then the ones off the beach, with the exception of the specific restaurants that catered to gringos (Tapas, Mauna Kea and Onda Brewery), they were the most expensive, but still worth a visit. Definitely seek out Angelita’s in Las Varas – probably one of the best restaurants in all of Mexico with HUGE portions and delicious food!

The Suites are very well thought out, designed and have all mod cons. Never needed the A/C but great to have fans in each room. if traveling with another family they allow just the right mix of privacy and communion. Any minor issue was dealt with expeditiously by the owner who was very helpful in all manor of ways. A few minor tweaks needed in the kitchen (Blender and a salad bowl would be helpful). Having the breakfast at Chac Mool included makes for a great start to the day as does the use of the beach chairs and umbrellas.

This rental is nor at all like the pictures or the description shown in the rental listing Arturo the manager was the only positive that the place had. The deck off the room was rotten and has actual holes in it. To say the room was Spartan would be an understatement. The sliding doors to the deck Were so old and worn they were useless and did not lock securely. Additionally there was almost no furnishing snd what was there was worn. The bar and restaurant service was slow and the cashier was unable to make proper change. The restaurant facilities were worn and inadequate and the area around the hotel was very noisy until after midnight....so little sleep. Also the door to the adjoining room was so old and Cracked it provided no buffer to the neighbours voices or crying children. The town and beach Of Chacala however are wonderful. Visit the area but do not stay here. There are many other places in town much better for almost the same price,
