Mixed Feelings

Reviewed By A M

The best thing about the The Midland Hotel is probably the location. Right in the city centre, across the road from the new looking shopping mall and adjacent to Forster Square Station which is handy for trains to Leeds & Saltaire. There is another newish shopping complex, the Forster Square Retail Park, just beyond the station. Another bonus is that the hotel has its own free parking lot for guests, enter off Lower Kirkgate. It’s a Victorian era grand railway hotel and it’s been well preserved over the years. It’s also quite large and of a vintage where the hotel rooms differ in size and shape and so you can go from one extreme to the other, in the same price band. After a mix up with communication on arrival day, I was given a small stuffy shoe box of a room on the main road. But the hotel front desk was eventually able to move me and to a room that was over twice the size, far lighter, brighter and much quieter. My new room had a large, renovated bathroom. But the bedroom was showing its age, especially the furniture. That said it was clean and fairly comfortable. Sadly, the ancient windows seemed to be fixed closed. There was no mini-bar fridge, but there was a kettle for tea & coffee and an iron and board. The restaurant was only open for breakfast, perhaps a combination of low occupancy and staff shortages. The breakfast buffet was OK, but just OK, rather old world to be honest and a bit on the spartan side. You could order eggs cooked as you like them, but sadly only poor filter coffee and toast, to order only, was a sad choice of just white or brown. By contrast lunch and dinner was served in the lobby bar and the food I ate over several nights was great. I can highly recommend the steak pie dish and the cheeseburger. The staff in the bar were always friendly too and this little bar was the highlight of the property. Though it did get busy at times so it seemed you could reserve a table for dinner. The hotel has two large ballrooms and was actively promoting live shows for the coming months. How that and weddings affect weekends here, I’m not sure, but hopefully they will reopen the restaurant in the evenings before too long. But would I go back, personally, as a solo traveller, probably not. At present it seems expensive for the standard presented. At the moment I think one might get better value for money and possibly better accommodation at one of the nearby chain hotels, but it's a personal thing. I should also say that these are difficult times for hotels post pandemic. At the end of the day The Midland is an historic building, it's far from being a bad property and the staff do try hard to please. Be sure to check out the Laurel & Hardy aspect if you do stay, who knew.

Very friendly and helpful staff, clean room and appliances that work (sounds obvious but so many places do not even do the basics right), reasonable prices and good location, nice breakfast, highly recommended and way better than any chain hotel you could visit.

Bog standard hotel with dimly lit bathroom and tired rooms. They don't make up the room daily, and if you run out of toilet paper, you got to collect from front desk. Food was nothing special and bar area was chilly due to front door being open. Centrally located. Spectacular views of building site over road.

Pleasantly Impressed

Reviewed By A M

I stayed at this HIE twice over two weeks. Before arriving, I had low expectations after staying at a HIE near London in the past and pre-covid, but I was pleasantly surprised here. The hotel is in a good location if arriving by train or bus, it’s literally across the road from the Bradford transport interchange. It’s only a short walk down the hill to the shops too. Getting to it by car isn’t easy, you’re best going into the adjacent multi-story car park before check-in. There is a vehicle parking bay to the right of the hotel entrance on Vicar Lane, but you can’t drive to the hotel entrance. The hotel is in an entertainment precinct with a multiplex cinema, bowling alley and a selection of common chain restaurants, though two of the restaurants looked to have closed down during the pandemic. Hotel reception and the bar/restaurant is on level two and the hotel only has four floors. As it happened, I had the same room twice and it was fine. Clean and large enough for two people and the window opened a crack. I was on level four and it was quiet. Breakfast is included at HIE’s and here it was fine. Far better than my last HIE experience. This isn’t a 5 Star hotel, so don’t expect a 5 Star hotel buffet, rather breakfast covers the hot & cold basics and it I think the hotel tries to do it well. There is a bar and they also serve a small selection of hot food in the evening. This second level is a good place to hang out. I have to say the staff were great. Very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I had a small technical problem with my IHG membership after the first stay, but the hotel was quick to remedy that for me. I was very impressed with all of them.

Room too cold/service unacceptable

The setting on the ac/heater stayed on cold no matter how high you put it up! I caught a cold, lost my voice I was sick for a whole week after I left! What a disgrace especially after I asked for extra duvet and complaint that the room was cold and nothing was done about it!

Incompetent and racist staff

Reviewed By Maxine W

Went to a family wedding. Despite having a booking reference and confirmation the receptionist was unable to find my booking, waited for 45 mins to be told that they could only accommodate 1 room but I would need to wait until 4.00 pm as that was checking in time, despite other guest being able to check in. When asked if they were aware of equal opportunities the sales manager Tania became aggressive and defensive. Booked for 2 rooms ended up having 1 and charged for 2? My sister was then approached by a white aggressive intimidating customer who was unhappy because he could not check in and also fuelled by the sales manger who kept telling him that we were rude customers. Been trying to contact the general manager for 3 days and no response
