Top 10 Hostels hotel in Western Highlands, Guatemala

May 19, 2023 Toi Mattera

Guatemala’s spectacular Western Highlands run from Antigua to the Mexican border. Pines blanket misty hillsides, rivers cascade through sliver-thin ravines, volcanoes rumble overhead. Catch market day or witness offerings to drinking, smoking St. Maximon, in Chichicastenango. See traditional life in the Ixil Triangle. Clamber the Cuchumatanes Mountains. Mayan dialects and ceremonies are still part of everyday life for the majority of Guatemala’s indigenous population, living where their ancestors trod.

AMAZING, best place to stay in Xela!!

Reviewed By R3346RTjasminew

This is the best hostel in Xela, everyone recommends it on the local pages and it deserves it! I have stayed many times during my travels in Guatemala (everyone seems to come back!) and its like coming home. The incredible staff go above and beyond, are super friendly, its very clean and with the hottest shower ive had in Guate! They help you with everything you need here. Its beautiful, tranquil and with the comfiest beds ever. Its also in a perfect location to reach all the tourist attractions and surrounded by restaurants, markets, bars etc. But inside the hostel is an oasis of calm as well. With great WiFi if you need to work.

Friendly and curtious

My spouse and I spent 9 days at the hotel. The receptionists are always encline to guide us, help organize activities in the area. The whole hotel is cleaned top to bottom every day, our room cleaned only when we needed. There’s a little kitchen where we can cook our own meals, or a restaurant on the third floor with a lot of options. We are used to have hot water in North America so the hot water tank system of the locals make us take a cold shower ?.

Hotel El Sol

This hotel is a hidden jem, its 5-10Qs from Lake Atitlan and is a Japanese hotel with super cheap rooms, hostel accommodation for 50Q's and the cleanest hotel I've ever been in. I hope you can list it as it complies to your requirements and is so much cheaper then other Atitlan hotels

Quiet but outdated and a bit grimy

Reviewed By helelle

Yes this hotel is quiet and the owner is polite but it is a strange place and a bit grimy. It is super cheap so that is worth considering but i wouldn't stay here again. The walls in our bathroom were mouldy and the whole place is in desperate need for some updating. There is a lot of wasted potential, such as the huge roof terrace with great views but nothing up there except bare concrete and there is no other outside space except the enclosed driveway with a swinging chair in the corner. Also, in the lobby there is tea and coffee supplies for 1Q each but no way to make hot water, it doesn't make sense. It's also really far out and yes you can get a tuktuk for 5Q pp but we like to walk but it's a good 30 minute walk into town. Great if you are driving or are really not keen on going into town but i think there are better places for the same money.

Terrible music, a lot of potential but in the end it's not worth it

Reviewed By jonasbartle8

Dont get me wrong I like most music. But the 'music' coming from this place isn't music. I describe it as a besrt rate monitor with bass. It's horrendous. 11am through to 2am the next day. The staff on reception are great, along with the kitchen and waiters. Plus the food is nice. The rest is rubbish to be honest, the rooms are hot and sweaty. You can hear every other room. The pool area is welcoming but once you hear the bass you want to run into the lake, which the entrance from the hotel is dirty. It has so much potential to be honest the music ruins a lot of it plus the entrance to the lake. Stay elsewhere unless you like bassy music.

Kasa Kiwi Hostel & Travel Agency

Kasa Kiwi is Quetzaltenango's newest hostel! Classic hostel in the historic center with 5 private rooms, 3 dorm rooms and No Bunk Beds! We are super central (2 blocks from Parque Central), super safe (lockers in all dorms), super friendly, and super clean (communal bathrooms cleaned 2x per day). We have a lovely patio surrounded by plants and flowers and a roof terrace with craft beer and wine bar with 360 views of the city and surrounding mountains.

Good for party, not so good for quiet early night!

Reviewed By Y2595YYchiarad

Kasa Kiwi is a cool hostel with friendly staff and a great rooftop terrace, located only a few minutes’ walk from the central square of Xela. As the rooftop terrace is also a bar/ hangout spot, it got very noisy when we were there (on a Tuesday night), so it wasn’t ideal for us as we had to wake up early the next day for a hike. There are only 2 toilets for everyone to share and they’re on the ground floor, so not ideal if you need a wee in the middle of the night! Otherwise the room was comfortable.

Good place to stay!

Reviewed By jenn-ac-1993

We stayed for a few nights and had a nice time. We had an upper level private room with incredible views over the lake. The room was large, spacious and clean and the bed was comfy. The rooftop terrace for breakfast was also a great addition! Only thing that let this place down was allowing really, really loud music on the rooftop late into the night several times - it didn't help that it seemed as though it was the owner and his friends who were visiting that were the ones causing the issue.

Sababa Resort

Worst resort I’ve every stayed

Reviewed By rastarockstarr

I normally don’t leave negative reviews because I’m a pretty low-maintainence, “go with the flow” kind of traveller - but the Sababa was by far the WORST resort I’ve had the displeasure of staying. First off, they have a very shady, CASH ONLY policy for paying for your reservation when you arrive (which wasnt stated anywhere on their website or Expedias site). And what makes it worse is they only accept $20 USD bills if you’re paying cash…wtf is that about? Also, they take your actual passport (they don’t make a copy), and put it in plastic binder, on the shelf?! (Not even in a safe!) You would think that is the worst of it, but my room had no hot water and the tub did not drain for TWO days! Please do not make the same mistake I did. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!

Nice Stay, but a Bit Noisy

Reviewed By 345elliec

Staff was friendly, responsive, and welcoming. We are a family of five that shared a triple room. The three beds were all matrimonial, and the room was spacious enough, yet cozy. We had to ring a doorbell each time we entered the hotel, and as our room was closet to the bell (and the front door), it was a bit noisy. The beds were warm, clean, and comfy. The water was hot with good pressure. The room was clean and basic. The hotel does not have a restaurant so plan on bringing food or eating out nearby. Also, there is not sign outside so look for the address numbers! ;)

Lots of natural light! Lots of plants. Loved the colors in the room. Really helpful staff. Would stay here again!
