Khajuraho Temples

Magnificent temples built between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D.

Reviewed By rambabuyarlagadda - Lafayette, United States

These temples especially the ones in the western group of temples are well preserved and are wonderful examples of the best temple architecture. One thing that is really unique in Khajuraho is that daily life in contemporary time is depicted beautifully in sculptures on the walls. Gives the best historical evidence of how liberated and equal partners women were to men in the Sanatana Dharma culture prior to Islamic invasions. One has to get over the superficial view of eroticism to get to the real meaning behind the sculptures and get the concept of transforming sexual energy into spiritual energy. A good guide with a spiritual understanding of the temple sculptures would be very helpful.

I should say that this place has created lovely and unforgettable memories for myself and my family. Not to mention a must see place for any type of traveller. First and foremost, I really appreciate the thought and vision of this whole project. The effort and dedication required to procur, transport, rebuild and maintain these masterpieces is unimaginable. All so that future generations know our past way of life and culture. It is gift to all Indians and on a second thought to entire humanity. It is beyond my vocabulary to share my feelings and amazement when I saw this place. Just to make sure I grasp a glimpse of everything there, I and my family went there twice and have had a lovely memorable, enjoyable couple of days. One of the best places that I have visited in my life and am sure everyone visiting this place would agree with me.

Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum

Mahatma Gandhi once lived in this simple, two-story building, which is now a museum, library and research center depicting Gandhi's life and struggles for Indian freedom through peaceful means.

Mani Bhavan was where Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934, and it was the focal point of his political activities. It is now the most fascinating museum, containing many of his books and papers, and in which his very simple bedroom with spinning wheel, has been preserved just as he left it. One can stand on the very spot on his balcony where he addressed the crowds. Not to be mossed if you are visiting Mumbai

Kerala Folklore Museum

Folklore Museum aims to provide art education to the students and helping to provide visual and academic knowledge to the art lovers, researchers and travelers from all over the world. Folklore museum is the only architectural museum in Kerala and the treasure trove of stone, wood and bronze sculptures, ancient terracotta, stone Age objects, jewellery, paintings, oil lamps, musical instruments, tribal and folk art, wood works, utensils, masks and traditional art forms etc. these are around 4000 artifacts from tiny to large size on display. This ethnic museum is the essence of the life and culture of the common man over the past 1000 years.

An almost bewildering private collection of (in the main) high end cultural artefacts from musical instruments to Theyyam masks and costumes to oil paintings to puppets to antique Keralan front doors, well displayed and maintained over 3 floors in a glorious traditional Keralan teak building. Courteous, knowledgeable staff. 100R entrance + 100R for use of a snapshot camera. Slightly haphazard labelling of exhibits but fine for me - would have been overwhelming otherwise Glorious theatre on the top floor with a coffered wooden ceiling embellished with beautifully detailed paintings depicting Hindu deities and scenes from the Hindu epics. Small cafe adjoining. A "must see" for anyone interested in the culture / ethnography of Kerala. There is a shop but the sales staff are not pushy in any way.
