We propose you learning something else about Gran Vía and surroundings from the urban, historical and architectural point of view since it was conceived more than 100 years ago until its recent last reform. We will start on the rooftop of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, projected by Antonio Palacios, where you will enjoy the best views of the city. Likewise, we will know the history of other buildings such as the new headquarters of the City Council or the Cervantes Institute, Torres Blancas or Colón Towers. After going down the impressive staircase of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and visiting the building inside, we will start walking the first stretch of Gran Vía, stopping at Loewe, the luxury brand where Ava Gardner bought his exclusive bags before going to celebrate the premiere of his films at Museo Chicote with a cocktail together with bullfighters like Luis Miguel Dominguín, as Almodovar has done later in the 80`s. We will visit the Telefónica Building, the first Madrid skyscraper, whose cultural Foundation we will access together. We will continue the journey through the second section of Gran Vía, knowing the old Paris-Madrid Mall, the first luxury shopping center in Madrid. Later we will remember the missing Hotel Florida in Callao where Ernest Hemingway shared nights with international correspondents covering the Spanish Civil War. From here you will enjoy the views of the third section of Gran Vía with its cinemas and musical theaters that we will walk together to Plaza de España where we will finish at the last rooftop. A secret corner where we will have a drink while I tell you the project that will change this square with the Casa de Campo, Sabatini Gardens and the Royal Palace in the background. Other things to note Access to the first rooftop is not included (+5€/pax). It is offered as an option to finish the tour on the rooftop of the new Hotel Riu Plaza de España on the 27th floor with amazing views. Access MON-FRI +5€/pax till 6pm (no queue) +10€/pax from 6pm (queue of 20-30min). SAT-SUN +10€ ALL DAY (queues in the afternoon-evening) I offer other rooftops at the end of the architous without paying an entrance. The acces to all the rest of the buildings is included. You can have something to drink on the rooftops where we will stop at the beginning or at the end of the architour as an option.

We had an outstanding tour with Zoran, who owns the company. The prior day we had taken a self guided tour of part of the historic old section of Madrid so Zoran took us to parts of Madrid we had not seen but are really glad to have visited. He has a lot of knowledge of the city, a great personality and a willingness to be flexible with his guests to adapt to their interests. The tuk tuk nimbly maneuvers the busy Madrid streets for a very enjoyable orientation tour.

The anecdotes, the way of life of the people and the innumerable things that their walls have seen. Of course, we can stop to try a wine or beer of some of them! Jaime is GREAT! He went through the masterpieces of the Prado Museum with us one-by-one in the 3 hour tour through the history, and ended with the Goya collection. The collections are wonderful, and Jaime especially helped bring out the historical development of artists, the civil war, and from Van Der Weyden all the way to the 19th century. Jaime knows them all. If you have one place to go, do this 3 hour tour of Prado Museum with Jaime, your body will be tired all throughout, and mind and spirit all filled to the top.

This Madrid free walking tour is the perfect beginning to any trip to Madrid. It highlights the cultural landmarks of the central part of the city, while providing a concise and very useful overview of the history of Madrid in the larger story of Spain and Europe. It is also important to note that this tour company, OgoTours, was founded and is operated by locals. There are many ‘free tour’ groups in Madrid. My tour was given by Tatiana, one of the founders of the company. Tatiana imbued the experience of the tour with a tremendous energy and affection for Madrid and her life in Spain. She shared great tips on places to eat and shop, suggestions on planning day trips, and snippets of information that only a local resident walking around the city to live their daily life would accrue. I was happy to support this business and share the enthusiasm with others.

We have always loved eating empanadas in Spain, especially those in Galicia, so it was thrilling to learn how to make them under the skilled instruction of Arantxa. She showed us exactly how to make an empanada, from the dough to the filling, while also discussing the interesting history of this classic Spanish food. A week later, I made my first empanada at home according to Arantxa's recipe. It was delicious and I can't wait to make another. It is going to become part of my regular rotation, as there is so much variety of what you can stuff the dough with. I recommend any cooking class with Arantxa. Even on Zoom, which is not easy, she was a very engaging teacher.
