Mount Kailash

Gangs Rin-po-che is the Tibetan name of Mt. Kailash which is considered as a sacred place in four regions: Bon Religion, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Every year, thousands make a pilgrimage to Kailash for the faith they believed that circumambulating Kailash by foot will bring good luck and clear the sins. The trek begins and ends at Darchen which is at 4,575m elevation.Mount Kailash trekking is one of the most challenging and sacred treks in the world. The trek is widely known as Mt. Kailash kora which is scared in four religions, Bon Religion, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. What’s more, this holy mountain is also the headstream of four famous rivers in Asia: Indus River (also called Shiquan River in China), Sutlej River (a major tributary of the Indus River), Yarlungzangpo River (also called Brahmaputra River) and Ganges River. Every year, thousands make a pilgrimage to Kailash for the faith they believed that circumambulating this holy mountain by foot will bring good luck.

Visited Mt. Kailash in July 2019 through Monterosa Treks. It was a wonderful trip. We were well taken care of by the staff. All of them were extremely helpful. Just to mention a few names Ranjan, Prakash. Food was very delicious, hot and always served with broad smiles in spite of the hard work that went behind getting the food ready in time for the guests. Big thank you to all team members of Monterosa Treks.

Tibet Highland Tours

Tibet Highland Tours, though not the largest company around, we are among the most experienced around. Our office managers have been working in tourism in Tibet for over 20 years and know all areas of Tibet extremely well. The company was started by local Tibetans, most of whom had been working for over 20 years already as tour guides, managers, and route builders. We can work with you to create the perfect itinerary suited specifically for you. Unlike many travel agencies that arrange tours to Tibet, we are not based in Beijing, Chengdu or Shanghai. We are based right in the heart of Lhasa, less than a 1 minute walk from Barkhor Square. All of our office staff, guides and drivers are Tibetans who are intimately familiar with Tibetan culture, language and religion. This gives us an advantage over most companies arranging travel to Tibet. Our company is not out just to make money. Our goal is to give back to as many poor Tibetan communities as possible. Several of our office staff are from remote, poor villages at the base of the Himalaya Mountains. A portion from each tour goes towards projects that we carry out in these communities.

Road To Tibet

While working as a tour guide for seven years, I discovered how much I loved meeting travelers and making their Tibet dreams come true. This led to the creation of my own company, Road To Tibet, in 2007. Fast forward, and I have now welcomed more than 1,500 groups to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), Kham, and Amdo. Whatever your interests and budget, I can create the ideal itinerary and take care of all the arrangements for train and overland transportation, domestic flights, hotels, trekking guides, home-stays and special interests such as cycling and photography. Introducing my clients to Tibet and supporting my cultural heritage in this way is an honor I take very seriously. Please feel free to contact me. It's never too early to start planning!

Ani Tsankhung Nunnery

Ani Tsankhung Nunnery was built in the 7th century by Songsten Gampo who used its meditation chamber. The monastery is a yellow building which lies on the street parallel and north of Chingdol Dong Lu in Lhasa. Since the 12th century the monastery has been used chiefly by Buddhist nuns. The nunnery's main hall contains a beautiful image of Chenrezi, the multi-armed bodhisattva of Compassion. The sacred meditation chamber lies behind it.

This nunnery was not as modest as seen in other parts of Asia where the nuns seem to get short shrift of the material wealth of the monasteries. Apparently the Jokhang Temple shares some proceeds with the nuns and they have a nice small gift shop as well. Outside were half a dozen nuns prostrating themselves over and over. We were advised that they are trying to match a past leader who did 100,000 prostrations. It would take them about a month, full-time, to accomplish this and they have some sort of clicker/counter on their wrists to keep track of the number. Sweet small nunnery and right of Barkor Square so easy to see after the temple.
