Mongolia /mɒŋˈɡoʊliə/ ( listen) (Monggol Ulus in Mongolian; Монгол Улс in Mongolian Cyrillic) is a landlocked unitary sovereign state in East Asia. Its area is roughly equivalent with the historical territory of Outer Mongolia, and that term is sometimes used to refer to the current state. It is sandwiched between China to the south and Russia to the north. Mongolia does not share a border with Kazakhstan, although only 37 kilometres (23 mi) separates them.

There are quality, fairly-priced souvenirs both large and small, all skilfully handcrafted by local artisans, so by purchasing their goods, you are really helping to support and empower the local community. I left with a stunningly elegant bag made by a Kazakh artisan and a gorgeously colourful zip pouch upcycled from decorative wall hangings. I also had the most wonderful conversation with the founder/owner Irene and learned a lot from her, and found the rest of the staff all very beautiful and kind. My visit to Mary & Martha truly left a smile on my face, and I could not recommend them highly enough.

Orkhon Valley

Reviewed By katafazekas22 - Austria, null

This place is really awsome. After leaving the city of Kharakhorum, you can go up a hill to a monument that overlooks the city. If you look into the other direction, then you see the river Orkhon like blue snake flowing in the middle of a lush green valley between two hill ranges. If you drive upstream on the dirt road, you will meet quite a few nomadic families looking after their herds of goats, sheep, cows or horses and crossing the river on horseback. On hot summer days the horses love standing in the cold water to cool down. There are a lot of wild animals too: birds of prey, mice and other small mammals and some other water birds too. There are even trees here, which is not very common sight in Central Mongolia. As you go further upstream you even meet herds of yaks and the place starts to look like Tibet... besides some gers here and there, and the dirt road of course, there’s no sight of humans, just beautiful intact nature wherever you look. We even experienced a massive thunderstorm coming out of the mountains, across the river and pass right over our camp. It was an amazing experience. I would recommend spending more days and nights discovering this area, especially if you love taking pictures.

This is well worth a visit as it visually wonderful as well as geographically interesting. It is a big limestone escarpment with a height of 200m and a length of 400m. It is well worth the climb to the top as it provides you with excellent views of the wonderful rock formations created by the wind. There were few people while we were there so it was peaceful as well as spectacular.
