Gros Ouvrage Maginot du Hackenberg

We enjoyed visiting the Ouvrage Hackenberg, dug into the Hackenberg hill. By taking the internal train to combat block 9 you understand how big this fortress is. Our guide Alain gave a passionate tour as his grandfather was a soldier at the Ouvrage during WW2. Seeing the turret in block 9 in action, from the in- and outside, was impressive. Be prepared that most guides only speak French and make sure to bring warm clothes, as the tour takes 2,5 hours and the inside temperature is 12 degrees C all year round.

Champagne DOMI

My daughter and I went on a one day champagne tour excursion from Paris. Just 8 people were in the group, all English speakers. We had a French tour guide who did a wonderful job translating from French to English as we were shown the property and guided through the process of champagne making by the owner Stephane. We had a wonderful time in his tasting room as well. A kind and unassuming gentleman, this champagne master was a wonderful host. As others have mentioned, he does not currently ship outside of France but we were able to purchase a few bottles there. The trip was a delight and a real highlight of our two weeks in France.

A lovely little spot for quite a nice champagne. We tasted and then purchased a 2015 vintage blanc de noirs. It felt like being in someone’s house. It was slightly awkward being just two of us for the tasting but of course a little champagne relieves the tension. In nicer weather it would be fun to sit outside.

Champagne Julien Chopin

Our house is located in the village of Monthelon, 6 kms from Epernay, the capital of Champagne in the « Coteaux Sud d’Epernay ». Monthelon is a typical Champagne village, nestled in the heart of the vineyard. The family has cultivated our vineyards at Monthelon since the XVIII century, but it was only in 1947 that the brand name Julien Chopin was born (or created). Our vineyards are located in the “Coteaux Sud d’Epernay” where Pinot Meunier is the main “cru” (villages of Monthelon, Mancy and Moussy) and in the “Cotes des Blancs” for Chardon-nay (villages of Chouilly, Cuis and Grauves).

It was a hot afternoon and it was wonderful to sit in the beautiful shaded garden sampling 3 of their champagnes. The explanations for each type of champagne was interesting too. All were amazing! So good I treated us to a few purchases in the shop. :-)

Museum of the Surrender

This place challenges you to use your imagination and asks you to stay and listen to the stories. There is something about the map room that inspires you to learn more about those who sat there in 1945 and asks you to look more closely at the people behind the names. There is something about the story of the unofficial newspaper that shows the US determined to seperate information from propaganda to let the front line forces make up their own minds, as the Axis trops were unable to. And there is something about the newspaper articles that casts sharp focus on history. The museum itself casts sharp focus of the position of Reims in history, and to the Second World War in particular. I can think of few places that will better reward the time spent here.

Great place for any Art Nouveau lover- and if you are not, then simply look for another places. Variety of Art Nouveau works by Galle, Majorelle, Daum and more. Artists that worked in Nancy. Be it wood, porcelain, glass or metal, superb works with complete rooms decorated in Art Nouveau style. Small nice garden surrounds the museum- just if you need some rest and a change of views. If you head after this to the Majorelle house, make sure you make a booking in advance. We were refused entrance due to not being able to book in advance.

This is a great regional museum with a fantastic collection of Gallo-Roman materials. Some great mosaics. In the basement is a Roman bathhouse and there are some spectacular painted Medieval ceilings and beams. We were there for more than 2 hours. Highly recommended.

Definitely worth stopping by this church to see the architecture and stained glass windows. There are explanations in English about the different glass window panels, which definitely contributes to better understanding of their historical significance! There's also a lovely peaceful garden beside the church that make for a delightful overall visit!
