My boyfriend and I stopped by after seeing a brochure for smoked Salmon samples and this place was so amazing! Kori our amazing helper gave us 7-8 samples of different salmon, and she was super knowledgeable about the different products. We never felt rushed or like a nuisance and the atmosphere very relaxed. The prices were super reasonable and there were lots of sales going on as well. Afterwards, Kori took a photo of us with a huge salmon - so cheesy but cute. She made this visit so incredible for us, a stop is a must on any road trip!!

Sitting in the balcony while artists were creating glass blown vases was a very informative experience. It was the first time I had seen the art from beginning to finish. It is an art and a skill. The Tacoma studio is set up so observers can see the whole thing in comfort, It is worth taking the time to see the total process.

We loved this book store! They had an amazingly thorough collection of books, and was it ever fun to browse! We were looking for some specific titles and authors, however, and they didn't have them, but staff were so helpful to us in finding that out. The historic building they are in is equally stunning, and is a treat just to see on its own. Don't forget to look up when you visit!

Dayton Historical Depot Museum

The Dayton Historic Depot is the oldest standing depot in Washington state. Built in 1881, it was moved to its present location in 1899 by capstan and horses. After it closed in 1971, the Dayton Historical Depot Society placed the Depot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, then they refurbished the building and opened as a museum in 1981. Presently, the first floor of the depot has been re-created to appear as it did in 1899. The upstairs, where the Station Agent and his family lived, contains a Gallery that has rotating exhibits. The freight room houses a gift shop of Depot memorabilia, western history books, low technology games, and unique gifts for that special hostess or friend.

Whenever I’m at Pike Place Market, I cannot resist stopping here, even if I’m only on a quick run for a bouquet of flowers. This stall offers a wide variety of high-quality cherry and nut treats to take home or to give as gifts. And this Pacific Northwest family business focuses on using ingredients grown in Washington to make in Washington. On my most recent market visit, I found the usual small crowd bellied up to the Chukar Cherries’ display of packaged delectables. Potential customers sampled products, such as dried cherries encased in milk or dark chocolate and a triple-cherry-nut mix. Friendly, upbeat staff, obviously accustomed to providing excellent service, handled questions and purchases with ease. As usual, I couldn’t resist the honey pecans. It is easy to get hooked on some of the offerings. For those who discover this has happened after leaving Seattle, don’t despair. The company has an on-line store that ships. I sometimes take advantage of this for holiday gifts. Chukar Cherries is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Its stall is located about midway in the public market’s main corridor. I recommend going early in the morning, especially in summer when the market is especially crowded.

Metsker Maps

Metzker Maps is a little treasure located near Pike Place Market, and it’s definitely worth some of your Seattle shopping attention. As the name implies, they carry a huge range of maps and map-related products: portable maps from around the world; huge wall maps, many featuring the wonders of the Pacific NW; a fantastic selection of travel guides, including detailed books about hikes throughout the Pacific NW and books featuring just about every world destination imaginable; and a great selection of other books about travel and maps. It’s a wonderful place to browse and to shop for gifts for travel and map lovers. Also, I’m a postcard writer and Metzker Maps has a fantastic selection of postcards from Seattle and around the Pacific NW, many of which feature really cool and memorable graphic design. The staff is consistently welcoming and helpful; I appreciated that during my fall 2020 visit they were following COVID-19 protocols carefully. A gem!

Sandphifer Gallery

Sandphifer Gallery features driftwood sculptures, fiber art and whimsical drawings by the owner and her husband, who also operate the gallery. Hand dyed scarves and jewelry are part of the selection as well as gifts created by the owner.

I had a great visit today with the owners of this gallery. The wood sculptures are beautiful - taking drift wood and other locally sourced woods and creating abstract imagery of whales and fishes. There is also a great selection of animal drawings/paintings and approachable jewelry. With Covid, their hours have changed. I found that when I called ahead, they simply came and opened the gallery for my visit. Much appreciated.
