Broadstairs is a coastal town on the Isle of Thanet in the Thanet district of east Kent, England, about 80 miles (130 km) east of London. It is part of the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, which includes St Peter's, and had a population in 2011 of about 25,000. Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, Broadstairs is one of Thanet's seaside resorts, known as the "jewel in Thanet's crown". The town's crest's Latin motto is Stella Maris ("Star of the Sea"). The name derives from a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff, which led from the sands up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary on the cliff's summit.

The Four Candles

The Four Candles is Britain's Smallest Brewpub (not the smallest pub, not the smallest brewery - just the smallest proper micropub that is also a proper microbrewery. We sell an ever-changing selection of our own beers as well as a small range of Biddenden wines, ciders and fruit juices. Ashmore cheese, Kentish pork pies and Black Country pork scratchings. Or a cup of tea or coffee if you insist. No bar, no till, no TV, no piped music. And no lager (as we're not able to make that). Just conversation and good company. We're open every evening and all day Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

We had watched a programme called "Home is were the art is" and decided that we would look around galleries rather than buying a print from a shop. We were staying near Broadstairs and noted that there were a number in Broadstairs to look around so headed for the town. We soon came across this tiny gallery. I was keen to go in as the paintings on display looked like the type of art we liked. We went inside but decided that there wasn't anything that we thought would fit into the new colour scheme of our lounge. Vicki over heard us chat and said that she was capable of painting anything in any colour! Well between Vicki and us we came up with the idea and after showing her a rug we had considered buying, she became very excited and could see exactly what she wanted to paint. We chatted about her ideas, paid a deposit and left. Scary moment, we were only taking this risk after watching the tv programme and feeling brave. Well I'm so glad we trusted her. When my husband hung the paintings I cried with happy emotion. The paintings had captured all the colours we wanted plus every happy memory of our time on a beach. Please go and see for yourself, don't take my word for it and I assure you, you will be very glad you did. I just wanted to add this, I've been told that Vicki has been contacted by Home is where the art is, if chosen she will be perfect I'm sure.

Arrowsmiths

Reviewed By ViewFromTheHill65 - Broadstairs, United Kingdom

I remember this shop from many years ago when it was still a chemist and always loved the old medicine drawers that line the back wall. It’s lovely that the character of the original shop has been retained and they are still there. Arrowsmiths started as a small quirky gift shop and over the years has grown into a truly unique style of gift shop. You can sometimes pick up a cheaper little bargain but on the whole it’s not what most would call cheap. I am a firm believer that you do get what you pay for and it’s evident here. I live in Broadstairs and have been shopping at Arrowsmiths for years, often going in just to wander and “oo that’s lovely” at the gifts; but usually coming out with something! The staff that run the shop are lovely, so helpful and chatty which I find really nice. They’ve worked hard to become the amazing place it is and long may they do well in Broadstairs.

Visited Houdini’s in the evening at the beginning of December. Broadstairs was fairly quiet when we went for a meal and had a look at a few other bars along the high street. But Houdini’s had a fair few people in and a great atmosphere. So we’re pleased that we decided to spend our evening here. There was a fantastic magician walking around doing card tricks and he then later done a show. Through the night there was a compere doing competitions and telling jokes. The bar staff was also very friendly and told us the history about the cranberry gin we were drinking. Me and my partner like to look for niche and different bars. And we will definitely be returning to Houdini’s.
