Top 10 Farms in Virginia, United States

March 1, 2022 Vivienne Hutton

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

One of my favorite “date” activities is driving through the beautiful countryside to cute little towns with views so husband took me to this place as a Valentine’s Day treat. And what a treat it was! We had brunch and every bite was spectacular. Truly. I am still fantasizing about the dill biscuit and the chicken liver mouse with seed crackers. The dining room in this novel greenhouse like structure with a lovely view of the potomac. It’s both farmy and sophisticated and it’s delicious real food that even excellent home cooks are not likely to be able to cook at home. The beignets were amazing as well. My main course of tempura fish was great too but the highlife items items were exceptional and memorable. A very special place for an outing and we will be back for sure in warmer weather. As an added bonus, the bill was quite reasonable.

Maymont

Maymont is a 100-acre American estate, an extraordinary gift given to the community by James and Sallie Dooley who lived there from 1893 to 1925. Whether strolling in the gardens, touring the mansion, watching river otters at play, or petting a goat, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

This is one of my 5 year old sons favorite places to visit. If you ask him what he would like to do, (on any given day) going to Bluebird Gap Farm is always one of the 3 most common answers. Bluebird Gap Farm is a petting zoo, admission is free, they have two large playgrounds (a smaller one for toddlers and a larger one for the "older kids") picnic areas, vending machines if you get thirsty or need a snack. Its just a fun way to spend a couple hours with the kids or grandkids.

Visiting from Vegas, we were excited to experience a Harvest Festival while we were in town. So glad we did! The farm is beautiful and the staff helpful and pleasant. They took our temperatures before we were able to get our tickets, had banners all around reminding folks to maintain 6’ apart and the emcee said it every 15 minutes or so. You could tell the animals are well taken care of and lived the attention. It was great to feed them and we thoroughly enjoyed feeding the birds.

This park is a wonderful place to get away from it all. It has animals for kids and adults to both enjoy, and they have activities for kids and families. For anyone who didn't grow up on a farm, it can be a really fun place to learn new things. For those of us that did grow up in the country or on a farm, it can be like a little taste of home from your childhood. They also have picnic tables around the property that we enjoy just sitting at and people watching. Sometimes will bring work or homework to do on the picnic tables just because of the atmosphere in the park. It's just a really relaxing place to get away.
