Saint Paul has been called the last city of the East primarily because early developers built it to fit Eastern standards: city squares or parks, towers and turrets, lofty arches, Baroque domes and elaborate adornments abound. Ideal for families and those who like to explore on foot, the capital of Minnesota offers big city attractions with small town manageability. It's an easy and scenic stroll along the banks of the Mississippi River from the Children's Museum to the Science Museum. The kids (and the young at heart) will love them both. Nearby are the grandiose State Capitol, designed by esteemed architect Cass Gilbert and the historic Como Park, which includes lovely picnic areas, a zoo and a conservatory. Also in the mix are modern museums, stately old mansions, interesting natural wonders and unique shops to browse around. Be sure to check out the stellar collection of contemporary works by local artists at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. From four-star luxury to affordable and family-friendly, Saint Paul offers a variety of lodging and dining possibilities making it a great destination for all tastes and budgets.

Resident theater of the Hallie Q. Brown Community center presents artistic productions that focus on the African American experience.
I never heard of it, either, but NPR talked about the director retiring, daughter taking over, the tradition of people attending BLACK NATIVITY. Almost 45 minutes of discussion, which at the end, made me curious. Goggling doesn't bring up the theatre quite as easily as I anticipated, not having the correct spelling. I found it and bought tickets for my family to see the "play" they described on NPR. Wow, you close to the actors, dancers, singers, music--it's a little place holding 80 or so I'd guess. You are so close that the sound blasts into your very being making hearing aids optional. Program suggests "sing along to your favorites" but how anyone could keep up would be a challenge. If you can hear drummer boy not sung ever in that way, how now can you "sing along" to the intricate notes and range of the performance's version? Have you ever heard someone sing-read? That's the only I can describe what SHE did on side stage--just mesmerizing voice, inflection, feeling, expression! To top it off, the person playing the piano or keyboard SINGS at same time using muffs on his ears? I'd never seen that before. Check it out, and...only a few blocks away is F. Scott Fitzgerald's house; take a moment to do that as long as you're in the neighborhood. Warning: Even when you're right at the GPS spot, you don't know where to find the door. It's a bit of a puzzle. Follow the crowd. It's a bit of a secret location, I guess. For our family, not any more!

My wife and I attended a CMA Songwriters event recently. It was my first visit to this beautiful theater. The location is downtown St. Paul, easily accessible by car or mass transit (train/bus), and there are a number of parking garages nearby. We had dinner at one of the many local great restaurants and then walked the short distance to the show. The staff was excellent and made access very quick and easy. There were many beverage stations, so wait time was short and you could bring your beverage into the theater, which some don't allow. The event was wonderful and exit was easy as well. I would certainly recommend the venue for any future events.
