Top 10 Classes & Workshops in York, England

July 13, 2021 Malia Yoakum

Just two hours north of London by rail, the city of York holds 1900 years' worth of history in its ancient walls. The Romans built the city in 71 AD, and the Vikings captured it in 866 AD. Stop by the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens for a look at what the Roman and Vikings left behind (they must have packed light when they left). From there, move on to the York Castle Museum for a not-so-quick overview of the most recent 400 years.

We spent half a day learning to cook Thai Street Food. The place was very Covid safe at all times. The chef was extremely knowledgeable about Thai cooking and the food we made was very authentic. We will definitely return to do a different course at some point and would thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone. I quite like the look of the knife skills course next......

I have been going to the Wednesday evening class "make your own project" since January . I started sewing in September of the previous year. This class is amazing. The setting is calm, friendly and spacious. I was welcomed by Nadine who was totally interested in my project and has always been interested to help. It is an informal atmosphere and I have totall confidence in what Nadine advises. If you want to imagine what it's like, it is like walking into a John Lewis haberdashery department and working on a project with a group of friends. I have continued to book.

My boyfriend and I visited Bish Bash Pot at the weekend and we had an excellent time. The staff were chatty and very helpful when answering questions. I'd definitely recommend booking as it's very popular with everyone; students, children's parties, families and friends. Also, allow plenty of time as it takes longer than you think to choose a piece, decide on a design and then paint it!

Sharmini's Inspirational Indian Cuisine

Sharmini Thomas, from Kerala (God’s own country) is now settled in York (God’s own county) has been teaching Indian cuisine for the City of York Council for the past 18 years. In addition, Sharmini provides team building events to Corporate clients through the ‘medium’ of cooking; client networking events; hands - on cookery workshops.

I had an unforgettable experience at Sharmini's Inspirational Indian Cuisine at the Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School. Sharmini lived up to the title - she was truly inspirational! The day started off with a hands (and nose!) -on introduction to spices which was informative and fun. The cookery workshop which followed was excellent. We learned how to prepare and cook an impressive array of dishes and Sharmini created a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. The Yorkshire Wolds Cooking School is also very impressive and provided a state of the art environment with individual work stations and equipment to hand. Sharmini demonstrated each step of the preparation before we were let loose on the ingredients. Dishes ranged from Butter Chicken (Murg Makhani) to Lamb Jalfrezi and onion pakoras to desserts like Carrot Halwa (which was delicious!) , plus side dishes. Somehow we managed to fit in time to have an enjoyable lunch and chat too! Sharmini was so good at explaining techniques, how to produce perfect rice as well as explaining a bit about the history of dishes and ingredients, what the names meant and how and when they were enjoyed in India. It was a truly authentic experience as Sharmini is not only an experienced tutor and teacher, she has also always cooked traditional Indian food for her own family. The dishes I cooked received an enthusiastic response from my own family. I have used the recipes many times since at family events and dinners when guests are always suitably impressed. I can also heartily recommend Sharmini's excellent cookery book: Sharmini's Inspirational Indian Cuisine which has clear recipes that are easy to follow and wonderful photos.

A trip to The Grand is always a luxurious experience. My trip to their Cookery School was eagerly anticipated and it lived up to my expectations. My friend and I watched Andrew cook perfect steak and chips, then were able to recreate the meal ourselves using his recipes. We were then able to enjoy our meal with a glass of wine. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I would love to return.

Firstly one is compelled to enter this delightful store because of its mediaeval exterior that transfers inside to beams and nooks and crannies that comprise a crafts-person's dreamland of colour and texture. Every possible kind of button in every possible material and shape, together with products and kits and ribbons that not only meet the maddest needle-crafter's crazy desire, but also provide perfect teeny gifts for friends and family, even if they don't sew! And then you discover that they hold workshops here - for everyone from the least experienced 'beginner' knitter to exquisite heritage stitching for those more demanding crafters. The fact that this is a family-owned business is apparent in the warmth of the team and the care with which they attend to even the smallest transaction. What a find. Lucky I don't live in York or I'd be moving in.
